Arsene Wenger revels fresh triple injury concern ahead of Altetico Madrid game

Arsene Wenger has revealed a triple injury concern ahead of Arsenal’s Europa League trip to Atletico Madrid on Thursday night with three players picking up knocks this afternoon.

We slumped to a disappointing 2-1 defeat to Manchester United at Old Trafford with Marouane Fellaini heading home a stoppage time winner to inflict another away defeat on Arsenal.

However, while the result was frustrating, the loss could have wider implications as Wenger says Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Alex Iwobi and David Ospina all picked up knocks today.

Mkhitaryan has only just returned from a five-game absence due to a knee injury but the boss says he took a fresh knock to his knee against United this afternoon – although it’s not clear if it’s the same knee.

Miki was replaced by Joe Willock in the 76th minute and Wenger says the Armenian international will be monitored over the coming days ahead of the trip to Madrid.

Iwobi was seen holding and stretching his hamstring during the closing stages of the game but he was able to complete the full ninety minutes and I think it was probably just cramp. However, he’ll also be assessed prior to the Madrid clash.

Ospina required treatment midway through the second half after taking a knock to his rib and while he too was able to finish the match, the Colombian international will need to checked over by the medical team.

Wenger is quoted as telling Football London:

Mkhitatryan had a little knock on his knee. Ospina has a rib problem. Iwobi has a hamstring problem.

Our for Madrid?
At the moment no. We will monitor them.

It’s a big concern to pick up more injuries ahead of such a vital game but none of the problems looked serious so I expect Mkhitaryan, Iwobi and Ospina to all be available on Thursday night.

I hate it when we get injuries when we are going to a top match in a few days.
