Predicting the 2017-18 Premier League Team of the Season

By on April 14, 2018

Burnley have been the surprise package in the Premier League this season, with the Clarets currently challenge for a place in the Europa League through league qualification. Sitting in 7th, Burnley need to make up four points on 6th place Arsenal in order to qualify, unless Chelsea defeat Manchester United in the FA Cup final.

Should Burnley qualify for the Europa League then it would be the first time since the 1966/67 season that they have competed in a European competition. With Sean Dyche building an unexpectedly strong Burnley squad, it will be interesting to see the Betfair English Premier League odds for Burnley breaking into the top four next season.

James Tarkowski has been one of the breakout stars for the Clarets, turning in a number of impressive performances at the heart of the Burnley defence. Tarkowski’s form as well as Nick Pope’s unexpectedly strong displays in the absence of Tom Heaton have helped Burnley to concede the fourth fewest goals in the league, behind only Tottenham, Manchester United and league champions Manchester City.

Another centre back who has enjoyed a good season is Tottenham’s Jan Vertonghen, with the Belgian defender establishing himself as an integral part of Spurs’ back four. Having been linked with a move away from the North London club, Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino will be hoping he can convince the defender to stay, should an offer come in. A transfer offer may depend on his performances for Belgium at this summer’s World Cup in Russia.

Vertonghen’s teammate, Ben Davies has also experienced a good season, has stepped into the role of left back following Danny Rose admitting his desire to leave the club. Not only has Davies produced some solid defensive displays but he has also helped in the attacking play this season, with two goals and six assists to his name.

Mo Salah and Sergio Aguero have both had good seasons for Liverpool and Manchester City respectively, with Manchester City claiming the Premier League title after West Brom managed to defeat Manchester United at Old Trafford, while Liverpool are closing in on the Champions League final, after Salah scored two goals against former club AS Roma in a 5-2 victory in the first leg of the semi-final.

With the vast array of talent on display each week in the Premier League, we have selected our own Premier League Team of the Season in the following infographic.
