Video: Notts Forest 4-2 Arsenal: More penalty controversy as Arsenal crash out
There was more penalty controversy involving Arsenal as we crashed out of the FA Cup with a 4-2 defeat to Nottingham Forest this afternoon.
Forest opened the scoring in the 20th minute thanks to some schoolboy Arsenal defending as Dowell’s powerful in-swinging free-kick was headed in by Lichaj from one yard out.
We made it 1-1 just three minutes later when Mertesacker tapped home after Holding had hit the post but Forest restored their lead on the stroke of half-time when Lichaj found the top corner with a stunning volley.
Holding then gifted the hosts a penalty in the 64th minute after a clumsy challenge in the area and Brereton converted to make it 3-1 to Forest.
We pulled one back when Welbeck pounced on a mistake from Smith to roll in to an empty net and it looked like it was set-up for an exciting finish as Arsenal pushed for an equaliser.
However, there was more controversy at the other end as Forest were awarded another penalty. Debuchy got the ball with a tackle on Traore but Jon Moss pointed to the spot. To rub salt in to our wounds, Dowell slipped as he took the penalty and kicked the ball against his standing foot. The ball ended up in the net but the referee still gave the goal despite the double touch.
There was no way back for Arsenal so we crash out of the FA Cup at the third round for the first time in 21 years.
