[Player Ratings] West Brom 1-1 Arsenal: Iwobi woeful, Wilshere lively

By on December 31, 2017

Arsenal were robbed of two vital points after Mike Dean gifted West Brom a late penalty and a 1-1 draw at the Hawthorns this evening.

We were poor for the majority of the game but should have snatched a win when Alexis Sanchez’s deflected free-kick gave us an 83rd minute lead.

Step up Mike Dean. The ‘referee’ couldn’t wait to award West Brom a ridiculous 89th penalty when Kieran Gibbs kicked the ball at Calum Chambers’ arm – which was in a natural position in front of his body – from 2 yards away.

Jay Rodriguez made it 1-1 from the spot, obviously, as Petr Cech doesn’t save penalties, so we were robbed of two points at the Hawthorns today.

Here are my player ratings:

Cech  6/10 | Dropped a simple catch early on but had very little to do in terms of shot-stopping. Once again, didn’t save the penalty which went straight down the middle.

Koscielny  6/10 | Had a solid game before limping off with 18 minutes to go. Looks like his Achilles is playing up, which I did warn about in my match preview! Poor management from Wenger.

Chambers  7/10 | Another encouraging performance from Chambers and was very unlucky with the penalty decision.

Mustafi  7/10 | Kept the West Brom attack quiet for much of the game.

Bellerin  6/10 | A rather subdued performance from Hector. Didn’t offer much down the right.

Xhaka  6/10 | Went through the motions. Kept the ball moving through midfield but kept things too safe at times.

Wilshere  7/10 | Jack produced a few lovely runs and was a driving force at times but couldn’t create many clear-cut chances.

Kolasinac  6/10 | Forced off after 32mins with a knock. Hopefully it’s not too serious.

Sanchez  6/10 | Got the ‘goal’ with a deflected free-kick but was otherwise fairly average. We didn’t see the kind of effort he put in at Crystal Palace unfortunately.

Iwobi  5/10 | Another disappointing performance. No idea why he started ahead of Welbeck. Wasted a couple of decent chances and adds very little creativity to the side.

Lacazette  6/10 | Worked hard leading the line. Created a couple of opportunities for himself but was starved of service once again. Link up play wasn’t great.

Subs:

Maitland-Niles  6/10 | Calm and composed display from the youngster when he replaced Kolasinac.

Mertesacker  5/10 | Why on earth did Wenger bring Mertesacker on at 0-0 with 15 minutes to go?!

Welbeck  5/10 | No real impact in his 15 minute cameo.

In truth, we were poor today but should have gone away with a hard fought 1-0 win. Once again the officials let us down. Chelsea at home up next on Wednesday.

“Once again the officials let us down”???? What about the cast iron penalty at 0-0 when Rodriguez was hacked down in the box at the Emirates Stadium? Would have been a very different match. You were unlucky with the penalty last night but lucky in the first match. These things tend to even out.

Iwobi was woeful but Welbeck was worst and watching last three games, Danny offered absolutely nothing after coming on.. reason why Wenger keep starting Iwobi
