[Player Ratings] Arsenal 1-0 Doncaster: Wilshere stars for sloppy Gunners

By on September 21, 2017

Theo Walcott scored the only goal of the game as Arsenal limped in to the fourth round of the League Cup with a 1-0 win over Doncaster last night.

Here are my ratings:

Ospina  6/10 | Didn’t have a great deal to do but made a couple of routine saves.

Chambers  6/10 | Solid and unspectacular during his return to the side. Off at half-time with a minor injury.

Mertesacker  7/10 | Marshalled the back-line like a pro and helped out his two younger defensive partners. Won everything in the air.

Holding  6/10 | A couple of hairy moments when he was put under pressure but steady for the most part.

Nelson  6/10 | Mistake almost led to an equaliser but showed glimpses of his quality. I was buzzing to see him play but I think he’d have been more comfortable further forward rather than having to worry about defending.

Wilshere  8/10 | A joy to see him back in an Arsenal shirt and he looked sharp. His passing was excellent, especially in the first half, and he worked hard defensively to stifle any Doncaster attacks. Let’s pray he can stay injury free. MOTM

Elneny  7/10 | Decent game from the limited Egyptian international. Didn’t put a foot wrong.

Maitland-Niles  7/10 | A real danger down the left early on. Used his pace to make a couple of important recovery tackles – one after his own mistake.

Walcott  7/10 | Lovely run, first tough and finish for the goal but missed a one-on-one early in the second half.

Sánchez  6.5/10 | Superb assist for Walcott’s goal but wasn’t at his best for much of the game. Kept hold of possession for too long at times.

Giroud  6/10 | Almost scored a stunning scissor kick early on but was largely a frustrating night for the Frenchman.

Subs:

Dasilva  6/10, Iwobi  6/10, Willock N/A.

It was an unconvincing performance from the boys and we took our foot off the gas without killing them off, which was asking for trouble. The real positive from the night was Wilshere so let’s pray he can steer clear of injury.

Our reward for the win was a home tie against Norwich City in the fourth round so hopefully we see the likes of Nelson and Maitland-Niles given another chance to impress.
