Arsenal favourites to sign England star after club decide to sell
According to The Sun via the Express, Arsenal are the front runners to sign Chris Smalling after Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho decided to sell the player this summer.
As always, ‘cheque book manager’ Mourinho is expected to be busy this summer spending millions trying to build a title winning squad and he’s already splashed over £30m on centre-back Victor Lindelof from Benfica.
The Swedish international’s arrival means they are stacked with central defenders so someone needs to be sold with Chris Smalling and Phil Jones the two favourites for the chop.
However, the Express are quoting The Sun as saying that Mourinho has made his decision and decided to give Jones another chance with Smalling the player he’s made available for transfer.
The former Fulham defender struggled to hold down a regular starting spot last season and he’s now set to leave Old Trafford with the Express saying you should place your bets on Smalling joining Arsenal as we’re supposedly the front runners for his signature.
Arsene Wenger is reportedly in the market for another centre-back despite the fact we have a number of options in that position with Laurent Koscielny, Shkodran Mustafi, Gabriel, Rob Holding, Per Mertesacker and Calum Chambers all on the books while Nacho Monreal also impressed at the back during the second half of last season.
However, it seems after switching to 3-4-2-1 formation last season the boss wants more reinforcements in the middle of defence and Smalling has been put forward by the media as a potential target.
Personally speaking, I think it’s a pointless signing even if we could get a deal agreed with United as I don’t think Smalling is any better than what we’ve already got available.

He was highly-regarded when he joined United and is still an England regular but he makes far too many mistakes and his positioning is terrible at times so I’d rather we just gave the likes of Holding and Chambers a chance next season.
If we need to buy a centre-back this summer, let’s go big and sign a world class defender not make do with just another squad filler like Smalling.
