BBC & Sky Sports journalists offer updates on Arsenal’s Mustafi deal

By on August 15, 2016

Some reliable journalists have provided updates on Arsenal’s proposed move for Shkodran Mustafi this evening and it seems the deal is still hanging in the balance.

Mustafi has been strongly linked with a move to the Emirates in recent weeks but the negotiations with Valencia have been dragging on for some time.

Sky Sports reported last week that personal terms had been agreed with the player but a fee is yet to be agreed with Valencia and their journalist Kaveh Solhekol has now taken to Twitter to claim that a potential £28m deal is now edging closer.

David Ornstein – who works for the BBC – then offered his own update by saying that Mustafi remains keen to join Arsenal but we are struggling to agree a deal with Valencia as the club are holding back funds to try and sign a striker.

Ornstein went on to say that while Mustafi remains the priority, Wenger is now considering Omer Toprak and Simon Kjaer as possible alternatives in-case we can’t get a deal agreed for the German international.

Toprak is a Turkish international who’s been impressing with Bayer Leverkusen in recent years while the 27-year-old also put in some excellent performances for Turkey at Euro 2016.

Kjaer has been linked with Arsenal for many years and the Danish international only joined Fenerbache from Lille last summer, but both players are regarded as fall-back options if we can’t land Mustafi.

We desperately need a centre-back to come in as soon as possible, as was highlighted by our 4-3 defeat to Liverpool on Sunday, but it looks like Arsenal are refusing to meet Valencia’s demands for the 24-year-old.

We all know Wenger has a budget to work to so if stretching ourselves to sign Mustafi means we won’t have enough money left over to sign a top class striker, then we’re doing the right thing looking at cheaper alternatives in defence.

We HAVE to sign both a centre-back and a striker before the window closes but time is running out so if Valencia aren’t going to lower their demands, then we should move on and push ahead with another deal.

Holding back money for a striker? What’s Arsenal’s total budget then, £70m? It wouldn’t matter if it was £170m, the top players don’t want to go to play for a perennial loser like Wenger, not even very good players want to join.. They might as well stay with the club they are at. And if Wenger thinks he can get a top striker (or even a very good one) for £40m in today’s over-inflated market, then he is more dense than a black hole.

Wenger is one of those people who says: “I don’t know what I want, but I’ll know it when I see it.” That is not a leader, or someone who should have control. But it is the reason Arsenal are ALWAYS still ‘looking’ to sign a player on the last day of the transfer window.

If Wenger wanted Mustafi he could have pushed the deal through two weeks ago. There was a price two weeks ago, and then Gabriel got injured and now Valencia have him by the short and curlies. If Wenger walks away because of the new price then he will have to sign a cheaper alternative that two weeks ago was not/should not have been on his radar. Clubs that compete at the top level do not put themselves in the position of having to settle for second or third best.

It’s almost as if Wenger wants Arsenal to fail, finish out of the top four, and be unable to sign quality players so when he quits at the end of the season whoever replaces him is unable to win more trophies than he accumulated – and let’s face it, there are many more managers who have won many more major trophies in the past 20 years than Wenger has (3 x league titles + 6 x national cup). For example; Moanreniho – 6 league titles + 7 x national cups + 3 x European competition. Even Benitez – 2. X league titles + 4 x national cups + 3 x European competitions. Conte was a maher in the top flight for only 3 years and he won the league title 3 times, and 2 national cups. I won’t even bother to list the achievements of Guardiola, let alone The Scottish One.

3 league titles in 20 years? George Graham was manager of Arsenal for less than half the time Wenger’s been lazing about in the seat, and he won 2 x league titles + 3 x national cups + 1 x European competition

Arsenal has the worst strategy and negotiation team in the PL.
