Arsenal boss makes Serie A hitman his No.1 target to replace Welbeck

By on May 12, 2016

According to a report in the Mirror, Arsene Wenger has made Alvaro Morata his number one transfer target as he looks to replace Danny Welbeck this summer.

Welbeck has been ruled out for nine months after undergoing surgery to repair the significant cartilage damage he suffered to his right knee during Sunday’s 2-2 draw at Manchester City.

It means the England international is set to miss the majority of next season leaving Wenger with little choice but to bring in another striker this summer. We needed one with a fit-Welbeck so we certainly need at least one striker now he’s injured again.

Several names have been linked with a move to the Emirates in recent weeks and while the Mirror claim we do have interest in Inter Milan’s Mauro Icardi, the paper says Arsene has made Alvaro Morata his prime target.

Morata almost joined us when he left Real Madrid back in 2014 before he ended up joining Juventus but it looks as though the boss has kept a close eye on his progress and is now ready to renew his interest.

Madrid agreed a buyback option when they sold the striker two years ago and the Mirror claim the La Liga giants are now ready to activate that clause and immediately sell the 23-year-old on at a profit, with Arsenal ready to pounce.

I’ve seen various reports in recent weeks on this subject and the general consensus seems to be that Madrid’s buyback clause is around £23m and they’ll sell him for around £30m. If true, we can easily afford that kind of money but I have my doubts over whether Morata is the player we should be going for.

He’s certainly talented and at 23, has plenty of years ahead of him to improve further but I personally think we need a slightly higher calibre of striker. Morata has scored just 25 goals in 87 appearances for Juventus so he’s hardly prolific.

For me, we should be targetting the elite strikers like Benzema, Aubameyang or Lewandowski – a striker we know can come in and make a huge impact. I still feel Morata would be a bit of a risk.
