Arsene Wenger has admitted he rushed Alexis Sanchez back too early and feels the attacker is suffering from a Copa America hangover.

Sanchez enjoyed a dream debut season in the Premier League after scoring 25 goals and providing 12 assists in his 52 appearances last year to help us lift the FA Cup.

However, the Chilean international has yet to hit to form this season having failed to find the target in any of his eight appearances in all competitions so far.

There have been many theories as to why the 26-year-old has been struggling but Arsene has admitted he made a mistake rushing Sanchez back too early after his exploits at the Copa America.

The attacker helped guide Chile to the trophy in his homeland back in July and Wenger believes Sanchez is also still feeling the effects of such a momentous achievement with his nation, but he’s backed the player to be back firing on all cylinders soon.

The boss told Arsenal.com:

“I played him very early before he was completely fit, physically. That is one explanation [for his form].

“The second is that every player who has won a big trophy with his national team takes some while to settle and come back to his best. These are the two main explanations for me.

“I think he has had 31 shots on goal since the start of the season and with his finishing qualities that should allow him five to six goals. Knowing that the finishing is a bit linked with your form and it is a bit cyclic as well, that is where he should be at the moment.

“That will come back, I don’t worry for Alexis Sanchez. Even when he doesn’t score he is still a major threat for everybody and I am confident he will score very soon.”

Sanchez returned to action after only one full weeks pre-season training so I think it’s fair to say he was rushed back waaaay too early.

There have been signs in recent games he may be finally finding some form though, so hopefully he can break his duck against Leicester tomorrow. The team he scored his first Arsenal goal against just over 12 months ago.
