Arsenal handed major injury boost ahead of Tottenham Clash

It looks like we can all breath a huge sigh of relief as the Mirror claims that Francis Coquelin’s injury isn’t as bad as first feared and he could even make an appearance against Tottenham this week.

Coquelin picked up a knee injury during the opening 45 minutes of our 2-0 loss to Chelsea on Saturday and although he managed to carry on until half-time, he didn’t appear from the dressing room after the break and was replaced by Calum Chambers.

Arsene Wenger said after the game that the midfielder had a ‘little knee injury’ and expected him to miss Wednesday night’s trip to White Hart Lane but wasn’t sure how long he’d be sidelined for.

When quizzed for an update on Coquelin by the press after the game on Saturday, Wenger is quoted as saying by the Mirror.

“It is a little knee injury, ”

“I don’t know how long it will be – certainly not for midweek. I don’t know yet how long.”

We then heard reports coming out of France which claimed that Coquelin had hyper-extended his right knee and was facing up to four weeks on the sidelines.

However, it looks like those reports were a little premature as the Mirror are reporting today that the injury isn’t as bad as first thought and Coquelin hasn’t yet been ruled out of the Capital One Cup clash against Spurs.

There has been no word from Arsenal to confirm this as yet but if true, this would be a MAJOR boost. To lose Coquelin for four weeks would have been a nightmare so it will be a big relief if the injury isn’t a serious one.

The paper says if he doesn’t feature against Tottenham then he’ll be available to face Leicester at the weekend but I wouldn’t risk him on Wednesday.

I know it’s Spurs away but it’s only the League Cup and there’s little point rushing Coquelin back and potentially aggravating the injury.

Depending on how serious Arsene takes the game, I’d either start Mikel Arteta or Aaron Ramsey if he wants experience, or throw one of the youngsters in if he’s going to field a fringe side.
