Arsenal Eyeing Move For Highly-Rated English Defender

By on April 8, 2015

According to the Telegraph, Arsenal are interested in signing highly-rated Charlton Athletic defender Joe Gomez.

The 17-year-old is rated as one of the most promising young defenders outside of the Premier League and he’s already broken into the Charlton first team, racking up 17 appearances this season.

Gomez is currently learning his trade at right-back but his long-term position is seen in the middle of defence and his potential has alerted a number of top flight clubs.

The latest to show a keen interest is Arsenal with the Telegraph claiming that Arsene Wenger and his scouting staff are watching his progress closely ahead of a potential summer swoop.

Obviously if we do decide to make a formal move then it sounds like we’ll face some stiff competition but we enjoy a very positive relationship with Charlton having signed Carl Jenkinson from then recently while we also sent Francis Coquelin on loan to the South Londoners this season.

Gomez has already represented England at U-19 level and was named in the UEFA team of the tournament at the European Under-17 championships as he led the team to victory, so he certainly sounds like he’s got a bright future ahead of him.

I don’t know what this young kids like but going by our passed dealings with
Charlton fc they have always turned out good players, but we could with the likes
of Sami Khedira or William Carvalho to strenghen the back & midfield.
