Ratings: How The Arsenal Players Rated During 2-1 Win Over Palace

By on February 21, 2015

Arsenal secured a hard fought 2-1 victory over Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park this afternoon to move up to third in the Premier League table.

Here are my ratings:

Ospina 6.5 – Smart save to deny Bolasie late on and made a couple of other routine stops, but lucky to get away with a moment of madness when he came flying out to head clear from outside his box when Mertesacker had it covered.

Chambers 6.5 – A decent outing from the youngster but his lack of pace was a problem against Gayle at times.

Mertesacker 7.5 – Another good game from Per. His height and experience was important in dealing with the long balls late on.

Koscielny 7 – Like his defensive partner, Kos dealt well with the Palace pressure – although he may have done better for their goal.

Monreal 6 – Struggled against Zaha in the first half but improved after the break.

Coquelin 7 – A little fortunate not to be sent off but his energy and desire to break up play was important today.

Cazorla 7 – Tucked away the penalty and although this wasn’t really a game for silky skills due to a terrible pitch, Santi still produced a few moments of magic.

Welbeck 7.5 – Great work to win the early penalty and clever run and snap-shot led to the second goal. Important contributions from Welbz.

Ozil 7.5 – Lovely inter-change with Giroud in build up to the second goal. Superb play on the break set up Sanchez who almost made it 3-0.

Alexis 7 – Nice ball to release Welbeck in build up for second goal. Should have scored early in the second half to make it 3-0 but sent the ball just wide.

Giroud 7 – Continued his recent form with a poachers goal. Put himself about up front but his touch let him down a few times.

Subs:

Rosicky 6 – Could have done better for their goal.

Gibbs 5 – Wasn’t involved too much during his 15 minutes.

Gabriel N/A – Only on for a couple of minutes.

This was a vital victory as we took full advantage of Man Utd losing and at least one of Southampton and Liverpool will also drop points tomorrow. It was a lucky win as we didn’t play well but who cares. Three points, up to third and we should go into the Monaco game with confidence.

We let them play while we sat back inviting them to attack we were truly lucky we did that when we played ttnham and it cost us the poits and our pretige

I appreciate the 3 points but I’m getting sick and tired of the negative substitutions from Wenger. Why is Wenger playing so deep and making stupid defensive substitutions that puts pressure on the whole team? Im not saying Arsenal should be going gun ho but Walcott is perfect to bring on when a team is pushing up trying to get back in the game.

I fully agree with you. Bringing two defensive players as substitutes that you are trying to block the opposite team can be counter-productive as Crystal Palace’s goal clearly showed. There is no reason why we should have brought Gibbs and Gabriel as substitutes because it deprived us of attacking skills. Only one of them should have come on and then ew should have added an attacking player like Walcott or Wilshere. Wenger should not forget that defence is the best form of attack. Hence Arsenal should not become too cowardly and expose our players to needless attack and unnecessary pressure.

You’re not the only one.. It’s become a disease, these senseless substituitions. Everyone knows that Arsenal are not the best defensively especially when balls are being pumped into the box in the frantic few minutes at the end of a game. With no outlet and no threat on the counter we just invite pressure that we are ill equipped to deal with. The defensive players being brought on for attackers are playing out of position so really add no value to the defence at all and then are useless whe we clear the ball out of the box. It just creates panic mode and we are quite capable of panicking normally without adding it. We have got away with this a couple of times this season when teams have missed sitters or as today the woodwork has come to our rescue but other games, particularly winning against ten men against Liverpool where it’s cost us. It’s like Wenger has listened to the various pundits and press rattle on about how we have thrown away games by attacking when holding a lead and then decided we would do the exact opposite. Isn’t Wenger meant to be intelligent? Sometimes i really wonder!

Correction. It should read Wenger should not forget that attack is the best form of defence.

What luck? Ozil scored in the first half and a stupid offside call denied Arsenal a well deserved goal. Besides Arsenal could have been 3-nil up in the second half but Sanchez narrowly missed. Luck is a four letter word! Up the Gunners, bring on Monaco!
