Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has given a team news update ahead of our clash with Aston Villa at the Emirates on Sunday afternoon. Here is a round-up of the main talking points…

The bad news is that Alexis Sanchez has picked up a hamstring injury and is now considered a major doubt to face Villa.

The Chilean will be given a late fitness test on Saturday but I’d like to see him given the weekend off to fully recover so he’s fresh to take on Tottenham next weekend. There’s no point taking any risks with him.

Otherwise Arsene will be picking from the same squad that took on Brighton last week, although new signing Gabriel Paulista could make his debut after completing his move from Villarreal.

The boss also revealed that Jack Wilshere will return to full training in 10 days so he’s still on course to make his comeback sometime in late February.

Danny Welbeck will miss the Villa game with his thigh injury but is due to return to training on Monday, so he should be back in contention to face Spurs.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain continues to miss out with a groin problem so he’ll join Mikel Arteta on the sidelines, with the Spaniard still nursing a calf injury.

Wenger told Arsenal.com:

on the team news…

The squad will be exactly the same as last Sunday. The only uncertainty we have isAlexis Sanchez who has a hamstring concern, and that will be decided on Saturday. He might be out for Sunday. The only [other] difference is that Gabriel is available and we’ll check him how he is physically but he should be alright to be available.

on Danny Welbeck…

Welbeck is very close. He is really, really, really nearly there. He will be available for the Tottenham game.

on Wilshere, Arteta, Oxlade-Chamberlain…

They are not completely there yet but they are not far. Jack should join in normal training in 10 days. Welbeck on Monday. That’s where we are at the moment. Arteta a bit longer.

The Sanchez, Welbeck and Oxlade-Chamberlain injuries are now considered short-term so hopefully the trio will be fit to face Tottenham, while Wilshere shouldn’t be too far behind them.

Despite the injuries, we should still have enough to beat Villa at home. Here’s hoping for three points on Sunday…..
