Arsenal Plot Stunning €70m Double Swoop For DREAM Pair – Report

By on January 15, 2015

According to reports, Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is ready to splash €70m on the double signing of Borussia Dortmund duo Mats Hummels and Ilkay Gundogan.

The boss is believed to have told the board that we need to make two additions this month; a central defender and a defensive midfielder, and it looks as though he’s identified his top targets.

We’ve been strongly linked with a move for Hummels in recent weeks with the German defender tipped to leave Borussia Dortmund after their disastrous first half to the campaign that sees them currently sitting in the bottom three.

The Daily Star suggest that Wenger is ready to commit around €45m (£35m) to his signature to try and lure him to the Emirates this month, but I have a feeling we’ll have to wait until the summer to have any chance of landing him.

While Hummels recently refused to commit his long-term future to Dortmund, he did remind everyone that he’s turned down plenty of opportunities to leave in the past. He told reporters:

“I have gotten offers from different clubs ever since I have been with Dortmund.

“I have always decided not to leave. I think I have made some good decisions and I want to make those in the future as well.

“I have never said I will stay until 2024 or 2030 or whenever.

“But I have stayed until today. I will stick to my way of not promising anything and maybe leave someday instead of saying I will stay forever and then leave all of a sudden.

“I am not really known as a globetrotter. I have been with two clubs in 26 years. Loyalty is important to me.”

The Daily Star say the second part of Wenger’s ‘double swoop’ on Dortmund will be for midfielder Ilkay Gundogan.

The 24-year-old has emerged as a key target this month and after reportedly refusing to sign a new deal at the Wesfalonstadion, Dortmund could cash-in as he has just 18 months left to run on his contract.

The Star claims that we’ll offer the German outfit around €25m (£20m) – although other reports suggest we’ve already tabled a €20m (£15m) bid and are due to hold formal talks over his signature.

Signing Hummels and Gundogan would be a DREAM as they’d fill two troublesome positions in the team and would make a huge difference to the side, but I’m not going to get my hopes up in fear of disappointment.

Gundogan is more realistic due to his contract situation but I’d be very surprised if we managed to win the race for Hummels.  If Dortmund agree to sell, I’d expect a number of top clubs to be interested, and any potential deal is highly unlikely to happen until the summer anyway.
