Arsenal ‘Expect To Sign’ Argentinean Striker This Month
Some more transfer news to bring you this evening with reports in Spain claiming that Arsenal expect to wrap up a deal for striker Jonathan Calleri this month.
Despite only joining Boca Juniors last year, the 21-year-old has been linked with a move to Europe in January with Arsenal believed to be one of several clubs showing an interest after watching him score six goals in his 15 appearances so far.
Arsene Wenger has sent scouts to watch Calleri in action on several occasions and the boss has supposedly made the youngster a top target this winter.
Now reports in Spain claim that Arsenal are set to table a formal offer to Boca and ‘expect’ to wrap up a deal before the end of the month, and despite suggestions Calleri may be loaned out, he’s apparently ready to come straight into the first team set-up.
So what do we make of this gossip? Well, with Lukas Podolski off to Inter Milan, Yaya Sanogo close to following him out the exit door and Joel Campbell also linked with a move this month, it wouldn’t be a huge surprise to see Arsene sign another forward.
However, talk of a move for Calleri seems like pure speculation to me. The report seems a bit light-weight as it doesn’t give any indication of how much we’re prepared to pay or what kind of contract we’ll offer the player.
Then there’s also the fact that they claim Calleri will play for the first team right away, but with no caps for the Argentinean national team, I highly doubt he’ll be eligible for a work permit.
So I personally don’t think anything will come of this. Only time will tell though….
