Wenger Confirms Transfer Plans, Club ‘Expected’ To Sign £8m Defender
Arsene Wenger has confirmed he is in the market for a centre-back in January and the club are ‘expected’ to secure the £8m signature of Ipswich Town’s Tyrone Mings.
We’ve been left badly exposed at the back after Arsene failed to adequately replace Thomas Vermaelen in the summer with Mathieu Debuchy and Nacho Monreal both having to fill in at centre-back while Laurent Koscielny has been out.
However, the boss insists he will bring in reinforcements next month as long as the right player is available. Speaking to reporters after Sunday’s 2-2 draw with Liverpool, when asked about signing a centre-back, he said:
“If we find one we will do it,”
“Without any doubt. If we find the right player we will do it.” Wenger told reporters
Several names have been linked with a move to the Emirates in the media recently but the Telegraph claim that Tyrone Mings is ‘expected’ to complete an £8m move from Ipswich in January.
The 21-year-old has been hugely impressive in the Championship and the newspaper suggests that Wenger plans to convert the 6ft 3ins left-back into a central defender.
Is he ready to play regularly in the top flight? We’ll have to wait and see. I’d personally prefer we went for someone a little bit more established who we know is ready to play in the first team immediately, but it’s obviously Arsene’s decision.
Mings looks to have a bright future ahead of him so if we do end up signing him next month, hopefully he can settle quickly and handle himself in the Premier League if called upon during the second half of the season.

£8m is a bit optimistic. He’s one of the brightest stars in the Championship, and a lot more money was spent on some serious rubbish during the summer. Additionally, Ipswich need him an awful lot more than they need £8m right now; unless Arsenal are prepared to loan him back for the rest of the season, his departure would leave a big hole in their promotion challenge.

Anyone that is close to Wenger should help us beg him that we need a solid experience center defender and a solid experience natural defensive midfielder this january. Failure to do this, will see arsenal fall out of top four this season. Gunners 4ever.

We don’t need to sell. Cresswell only went in the summer because we already had a ready replacement in Mings. The owner realises that he would make a better profit if Mings helped us into the Premiership than accepting £8m especially when they reckon that he is worth higher than £12m.
