Arsenal ‘Very Close’ To Agreeing €12m Deal To Sign Defender

By on November 26, 2014

Arsenal are close to securing a €12m deal to sign Swiss international defender Fabian Schar from FC Basel in January, according to reports.

It’s clear for all to see we need to sign another centre-back as the defence has been vulnerable during Laurent Koscielny’s absence in recent weeks.

Nacho Monreal has been forced to play out of position and now it looks like we’ve decided to rush Kos back early from an Achilles injury to try and plug the holes at the back.

Arsene Wenger hinted last month that he’ll look to bring in a defensive player in January and now reports in Spain claim we’re ‘very close’ to agreeing a €12m (£9.5m) deal with Basel to bring highly-rated centre-back Schar to the Emirates this winter.

Schar is in the final year of his contract so €12m actually seems a little steep for a player who’s yet to really prove himself outside of the Swiss league. Sure he’s done well in the Champions League at times, but I’d say a fee nearer €6-€8m would be fairer.

Either way, the 22-year-old would be an excellent signing and he’d give us some much-needed depth at the back. He also wouldn’t demand an immediate first team place which would give him time to learn from Kos and Per before gradually establishing himself over the next year or so.

Therefore, I hope these reports are accurate and he comes in January, but I think much will depend on whether Basel make it through to the knockout stages of the Champions League.

They currently hold a three point lead over third-placed Liverpool and if they manage to hold on to book their place in the next phase, I really don’t see any reason why they’d cash in on one of their key players.

Wenger is monitoring the players he want to bring in to Arsenal, people might talk and talk, but himself knows what he need and he is aware about it, lets wait and see maybe he has already finalized with certain players for January 2015 already. We know Arsene Wenger very well and his experience always makes him a very good coach, although sometimes he makes mistakes, he is the right man for Arsenal for the time being. Every time when under pressure he have proved his critics totally wrong. I rate him one of the best coaches in the world because of his philosophy. Every one who is a fun of football want to win, but in football they ups and downs, sometimes there are difficult times and we have to accept that. Every one want to give an idea of how Wenger should select his team, even those retired players who failed to do well after their retiring when they tried to be managers of certain clubs, they are also blaming Wenger and talking as if they know everything in football, yet some of them failed to be good managers after being given that chance and they still claim to know better than Arsene Wenger, which I find to be ridiculous. Arsenal is trying to build the team the way Arsene Wenger want it to be, he has his plans after signing new contract to extent his stay at Arsenal. He is not a full like many people say, they say, he is running out of ideas which I totally disagree. I think Arsenal is very unlucky because of many injuries. Even if you take the coach from the moon, he will not make miracle with such injuries, people do not take into consideration the number of seniors and star players of Arsenal who are not playing because of injuries, and that makes the team to be weak, and they are so many adjustments Wenger has made to the team to try and win games but sometimes it is very difficult to adjust a team and start winning games as usual, there should be some ups and downs, but he should be given chance to do his job without many interference, he has done it for so many years when under pressure to deliver.

Why would Baseal let him leave on a free if a team is willing to pay quite a bit of money 3 months before. I’m sure if a good offer came in they would accept qualifying for the next stage could get irrelevant.

The bigger issue would be if finds the offer attractive or would wait till summer to have more options.

Also when does Wenger ever want to pay for a player in the last year of a contract?

The biggest mistake that Wenger has been making for quite a long time now is that he doesnt sign players with a winning mentality, a leader or two would go a long way with the AFC. Sanchez is the first in quite a while but hes new to the club country and language and also maybe playing at the wrong end of the pitch for best effect, against dortmd i liked the way Sanchez after his goal he kept making a triangle gesture to his teammates so to keep a shape.

I think Schar would be useful but i dont think hes the type of defender this club really needs. We need an experienced winner whos done it all and is hungry as ever, a bit like the Sanchez signing.

there is no straight way in a journey but Wenger need to do something great this January than identifying good players for others to buy. it nags a lot.
