Player ‘Undergoes Arsenal Medical’ Ahead Of €10m Move – Reports

By on August 18, 2014

It looks like Arsenal are about to wrap up their fifth major signing of the summer with reports claiming that Kostas Manolas has undergone a medical ahead of a €10m move from Olympiakos.

The Greek centre-back has emerged as a top target in recent weeks as Arsene Wenger stepped up his hunt for a replacement for Thomas Vermaelen – who joined Baarcelona earlier this month.

Speculation suggested that we had opened talks with Olympiakos over the 23-year-old in early August and were quoted €10m (£8m) by the Greek outfit – which is a very reasonable fee for a player of his quality and potential.

Now, the Independent are reporting that Manolas has successfully undergone a medical with Arsenal and despite interest from the likes of Juventus, it appears we have won the race for his signature with the move expected to be sealed this week.

This news comes after Arsene Wenger confirmed last week that he will sign another centre-back if he can identify the right player.

“Vermaelen behaved outstandingly last year – I am grateful for him and I wish him very well,” Wenger said.

“If I can find another centre-back I will do it.”

It looks like he has now found that target and Manolas will become our fifth major signing of the summer following the arrivals of Sanchez, Ospina, Chambers and Debuchy.

If, as expected, the move goes through he will add some much-needed depth to our back line and provide competition to Koscielny and Mertesacker in the middle of defence.

    “Player undergoes medical”
Thanks for making the headline so clear and specific. Otherwise I might have got confused and thought that it was a dog or a jellyfish having the medical.
Bravo for your championing of quality in online football journalism.

Manolas is not a player I am familiar with, but he will hopefully offer depth and rotation to the squad. He’s young, so might be a long-term replacement for either Kos or the BFG.

Chambers looks good so far, though you have to wish the BFG was back for Everton this weekend.

It is good to see Arsene Wenger giving Vermaelen credit for his professionalism during his transfer saga. Never once did he seek to upset the Arsenal apple cart with posturing or transfer requests, or rash statements in the media. He deserves credit for that. He also deserves more credit for his play than he gets. Man U and Barcelona didn’t spend six months chasing him because he sucks. He deserves the opportunity at Barcelona.

Good piece of business. Now a striker …. a guy like Vargas, and young Rabiot!
That will put ArSenal in instead this season!
No way must Campbell be loaned out!
Personally Arsenal will win trophies due it’s good mix of players….With experience and quick footed and speedy mid field class!

As far as tactics are concerned,Wenger is not as accomplished as the MC and Blues manager.I know he almost won the title last season and in years before. Why does he fail repeatedly and make the same mistakes?
This is due to his arrogance and I know best mentality.
Regardless of who he buys he must make the gunners less predictable. He likes to engage in passing frenzy instead of going direct and conceded against Palace first. Take it from me if he were playing the big boys,he won’t be able to come back.

The Gunners need two very physical DMs like yesterday. Song would not be a bad idea. Tiote and Schneiderlin are not bad either.

Very well said Malaysian Gunner! Wenger is stubborn not arrogant. Wenger is a tactical dinosaur. MC and Blues gaffers would be under achieving nobodies without the deep pockets of their owners. Wenger has been running the Gunners on a shoe string budget admiringly for years. The Blues gaffer is becoming predictable with his Specialist in Parking the Buses tactics and counter attacking gamble that exploded in his face with Diego Simeon’s similar, but more flexible, tactics during the CL semi-finals. Wenger must become tactically flexible, ditch tiki-taka/ sexy football, sign more physical players and play with the ruthless efficiency of the Germans at the World Cup. As one Gunner fan to another, lets hook up on FB. The conversation has only just begun.

Some of u guys here sound like fake gooners. All u want is to buy and buy and buy, then ironically turn around and blame the lack of growth in the lik of Coque, Jack, Miquel and Bellerine to name but just a few. How will they mature if they dont play competitive matches?

Wenger is a superstar manager because he is successiful at both managing a club profitable and also coach. He is classier than Mourinho and better than Pellegrin. These guys are given ready made superstars who need no coaching but motivation only. Mourinho is a good motivational speaker.

Wenger creates stars…Henry, Van Persy, Fabr, Ramsey. Check how many Wenger products are in City, Barca, Man Utd,…Wenger is footballistically a Prof indeed.

    Arsenal wins 3.0.

Arsenal has too much young talents to recycle a football deliquent like Song. Remember his kung fu elbow in Brazil? He got red card and Cameroon were knocked out of World Cup. Song will indeed soil the Emirates puma red carpet. Jack can play DM, so can Coqueline. It is only by playing that you can improve them.

    Forever Gunners.
