Wenger Confirms He’s In The Market But Wont Sign Cavani Or Reus
Arsene Wenger has confirmed he is still in the market for new signings but has ruled out bringing in another attacker after saying we have ‘unbelievable’ strength up front.
We’ve brought in four major signings so far this summer in Alexis Sanchez, Mathieu Debuchy, David Ospina and Calum Chambers and all have settled in well since their arrivals.
But fans are still yearning for more new additions with a centre-back, defensive midfielder and a striker the main positions supporters feel we need to strengthen.
The likes of Mats Hummels, Kostas Manolas, William Carvalho, Sami Khedira and Marco Reus have all been strongly linked in recent weeks, while reports earlier this week suggested that Arsene was still hopeful of signing Edinson Cavani this summer.
Speaking to Arsenal.com today, Arsene said he’s happy with the business he’s done so far but admitted he’s still in the market as we’re still short in some areas. However, he has ruled out bringing in another striker as he feels with Walcott nearly fit again and Campbell back in north London, we have ‘unbelievable strength’ up front.
“I’m happy with the players I signed, with their quality and their attitude,” Wenger said.
“There hasn’t been a massive change but we signed Debuchy, Sanchez, Ospina and Chambers, all of them have integrated well mentally into the team.
“We are not destabilised and I feel it’s a strong reinforcement of our squad. Will I still do something? I don’t rule it out. Our finances are still healthy but we want to go through in the Champions League group stages to do that.
“Number-wise we are maybe a little short in some areas of the game but the depth of the squad is very good.
“Up front we have plenty of candidates. Joel Campbell has joined us again, plus the new signings, while Walcott is coming back at the end of the month. So if you look at the number of players we have up front, we have unbelievable strength.”
This would rule out the arrival of players like Cavani or Reus, and as I explained yesterday, I’m not surprised. The boss has made it clear his priority is to strengthen the defence and/or defensive midfield areas so I wouldn’t expect to see any more attackers signed this summer.

Honestly, I don’t think him saying we have unbelievable strength means he won’t sign another striker. Remember last summer when we signed Ozil? He was probably only player we didn’t need at the time given the options we have in that area yet he signed him anyway. And for a club record fee nonetheless.
My point is history has proven that Wenger WILL shell out for a player that he considers absolutely world class regardless of the situation on the ground. Ironically, Cesc is the exception to that rule but then again, signing cesc would have been overdoing it.
Sanchez was an absolutely amazing signing but isn’t going to flourish as a number 9. He is like Theo, not suited to be an EPL front man rather is best suited to play off the main striker. Deep down Wenger knows that we lack a truly world class given the options we have right now (Giroud and Sanogo).
Plus remember Wenger gave a glowing endorsement to Cavani (just like he did Ozil years before he joined us) so I honestly would rule out Wenger going for it. I’m obviously not expecting it to happen but I wouldn’t be surprised if it did.

I believe Arsenal still need to sign more players in other positions apart from the defence and midfield. All the signings Wenger has made are replacement for those that left, ospino for fabiaski, debuchy for sagna, chambers for vamelen, sanchez for bentner, chambel for park. So nothing new yet, just and upgrade of players. So i believe Arsenal still need a central defender, defensive midfielder and a topclass striker.

well said Dennis. Also, like the past few summers a lot depends on what Real does in the window in that a chain reaction occurs. Last summer was the first time Arsenal was able to afford one of Real’s ‘make weights’ when they upgrade a position and have no use for another world class player. Who would be your 3 candidates for the positions you mentioned?

iam quite happy that wenger,at last, appear to have believed that youngster without world class quality can not win laurels,so all i expect now is a commanding figure as a defensive mid fielder. i feel khedira is still in the picture,it may be at the tail end of transfer window. up gunnerz

Arsene Wenger will be very stupid not to bring inn a portent striker n think he can win something because the likes of Giroud and are nothing but useless players so I think it would have wiser not to have spend at all because arsenal will again placed fourth on de table without a world class striker.

Hi Gidsilvia! I believe this is a forum where people express their mind, it is not a place of abuse. Please don’t use any abusive words again. Thanks.
Personally i believe Arsenal will compete this season for premier league but at the end they might fail because of lack of world class striker (S) Giroud is not a world class and will never be but Sanogo is still developing and i am of the opinion that he should be loaned out to a smaller EPL team for him to speed up his development. Sanchez is a great signing for Arsenal and his gona help Arsenal a lot but at times you need a backup player like him to support him but not Giroud. Campbell will be great player in Arsenal too but he still needs premier league development, if he is loaned out to a smaller EPL team it will also his development. Arsenal needs a world class striker and a central defender. The midfield is still very much ok but adding Sami Khedira to the team will make Arsenal a very complete and combative team. Wishing Arsenal an outstanding success this new season. Thanks

People said about the need of world class striker, but who? Cavani or Falcao is not much better than Giroud considering current squad includes too many technical players but lack physical presence.
Baloteli is only good option but Arsene will wait until last minute to get at low cost. In addition, to contain men like Baloteli should only buy at his lowest point of courier. If he will be in, Podolski will be offloaded.
DM and CB shall be highest priority. A versatile man who can play in both positions, will arrive in the next weeks.

Arsenal fan. realistically we can win the league this year but we definitely need some stellar signings.if there was a time in Wengers career at Arsenal to finally splash out big in the transfer market like he has never done before it is right now.Yes we shld be signing Khedira Cavani Falcao Reus Bender Nastajic Hummels Casillas Song etc and stop scouting and feeding players to our rivals.Come on Wenger look lively and lets start winning again,go on spend some money dont be shy.
