Arsenal Make Contact With Bundesliga Giants As Wenger Eyes £30m Move

There were some interesting reports circulating over the weekend claiming that Arsenal have joined Manchester United in the race to sign Borussia Dortmund defender Mats Hummels.

United have been strongly linked with the German international this summer but the Mirror claim that we have now made contact with Dortmund and asked to be kept informed about the players situation.

Jugen Klopp laughed off reports linking Hummels with a £16m move to Old Trafford last month, but the newspaper seems to think that privately Dortmund accept they would have to cash-in if £30m was put on the table.

Arsene Wenger admitted on Saturday that we are short at the back and with Thomas Vermaelen expected to leave, we are going to have to bring in another centre-back. The Mirror claim the boss has identified Hummels as the man he wants and is prepared to make his move after learning of the 25-year-old’s potential availability.

I must admit until now I’ve been expecting us to bring in a relatively unproven defender – someone like Fabian Schar from Basel – so this link to Hummels has come as a bit of a surprise.

Obviously he’d be an excellent signing as he’s one of the best centre-back’s in the world, but I just don’t see how we’d be able to keep him, Per and Kos all happy. One of them would have to sit on the bench and I’m sure Hummels wouldn’t come here to do that and Arsene is unlikely to spend £30m for a back-up player.

However, Per and Kos have formed a solid partnership at the back over the last 18 months, so it’s difficult to see the boss breaking them up just yet. Mertesacker will be 30 next month, so we do need a long-term replacement for him, but I think he’s still got another season in him at least while Koscielny is one of the best centre-back’s in Europe, so I’d personally be hugely surprised if we did end up bringing Hummels in this summer.

    No matter how good a signing a Hummels would be that would be like setting fire to £30 million quid,we have a solid back two with Per & Kos,so we should put the money to better use & sign Carvalho & Khedira!!!

    But he could play them as a back three, Humels – (Per – sweeper) – Koz, flanked by Debuchy/chambers, Gibbs/Monreal, pushed up as wing backs. Its not a formation we have not played before….
