Arsenal Defender Ruled Out With Knee Injury

Arsenal skipper Thomas Vermaelen has been ruled out of tonight’s crucial World Cup round of 16 clash with the USA due to a niggling knee injury, Belgium boss Marc Wilmots has confirmed.

Vermaelen picked up the problem during the opening stages of Belgium’s 1-0 win over Russia almost 10 days ago and subsequently missed their final group stage match with South Korea.

It was hoped he’d return in time to face the States tonight but boss Marc Wilmots confirmed at his press conference that the 29-year-old will once again miss out, but they hope to have him back in time for the quarter finals, if they make it through.

“Thomas, though, has not enough time to be fit by tomorrow [Tuesday].

“He will be fit if we make the quarter-finals. He will return to full squad training in a day or two.” Wilmots told reporters

It’s unfortunate for Vermaelen to pick up an injury at the World Cup but he seems to have been suffering from knocks over the past year or so. Perhaps that’s down to his lack of first team football….
