Radamel Falcao To Arsenal?

By on June 23, 2014

Radamel Falcao is expected to leave Monaco this summer – could he end up at Arsenal?

The Colombian only joined Monaco from Ateltico Madrid in a £52m deal last summer but he endured a frustrating debut season in France. After scoring 11 goals in his first 19 appearances, his season was cut short by a serious knee injury in January and the problem also ruled him out of the World Cup.

Reports in today’s newspapers suggest that Falcao isn’t interested in returning to Monaco and wants to secure a big-money move this summer. While the Express claim Real Madrid is his preferred move, they also state the likes of Chelsea, Liverpool and of course Manchester City as other potential destinations.

It was interesting to see that Arsenal weren’t included in this list. If a newspaper is going to link Premier League clubs with a striker, surely Arsenal are the most obvious candidates right now?

Of all the big English clubs, we are the ones’ who are DEFINITELY in the market for a top class striker, so if a player like Falcao is available, surely we should be interested?

We were linked with the Colombian back at the turn of the year when the PUMA kit deal was announced when the papers suggested that our new manufacturers could help us land Falcao due to his ties with the company. It was laughed off at the time but now it’s looking increasingly likely he’ll leave this summer, perhaps it’s not so unthinkable after-all?

It’s clear we need to sign a top class striker this summer and Falcao is certainly that. His goal-scoring record is incredible – 199 goals in 302 career appearances – and he’d vastly improve our front-line if we were able to land him.

We’d finally have that deadly finisher that many feel we’ve lacked in recent years. He can play the lone role up front, he’s strong, pacey and would stretch defences leaving space for the likes of Ozil and Cazorla to exploit. So no doubt he’d be an excellent addition.

However, any potential transfer would be extremely difficult to pull off. There must be doubts over his long-term fitness following his serious knee injury, and at 28, it would be something of a risk to splash out around £50m on a player who has just tore left knee ligaments.

We’d also face some stiff competition for his signature. Madrid could be involved, no doubt PSG would be sniffing around, Juventus love to buy strikers, and then you’ve got the domestic rivals to think about too, so we could face something of a ‘bidding war’ situation and we all know Arsene doesn’t like those.

The other problem I could see is the boss not being willing to pay around £50m on a player who won’t hold his value and who could have little sell-on value in two-to-three years time, so for all these reasons I think any transfer is unlikely.

Maybe Arsene will surprise us and make a move for Falcao, and I’m sure there would be many happy Gooners if he did, but I think we’ll see him go for a player less high profile, younger and of course cheaper this summer.

Wonder what planet are you on? Wenger to pay £300k per week which together with transfer fees would swallow all his budget of £100m? Wonder what you are smoking?
