Arsenal Face Fight With Chelsea + Man Utd For £25m Hitman

By on April 11, 2014

Arsenal will have to fight off interest from Chelsea and Manchester United if we want to land Porto striker Jackson Martinez this summer.

The Colombian hitman has been scoring goals for fun in Portugal since joining Porto two years ago with 41 goals in just 53 league games so far, and it’s led to interest from the Premier League big guns.

Arsenal have been strongly linked with the 27-year-old over the last two transfer windows and his name is supposedly on our hitlist once again this summer as we look to finally bring in a top class striker to compete with Olivier Giroud.

But it appears we’ll have to battle it out with Chelsea and United with the Daily Mail reporting that our rivals have deployed scouts to watch Martinez in action against Braga this weekend.

Porto are renowned for driving a hard bargain and understandably they won’t let their star striker go without a fight, and the Portuguese giants will demand at least £25m for his services this summer.

However, while the Mail suggest that Arsenal are keeping an eye on Martinez, we see him as a back-up option to pursue only if we fail to land our top targets, with Bayern Munich’s Mario Mandzukic believed to be our first choice option. The same goes for Chelsea and United, as the duo will only go for Martinez if they fail to land the likes of Diego Costa and Edinson Cavani.

I would be happy with either to Martinez or Mandzukic be honest, but the Bayern striker is perhaps the stand-out choice as he’s got experience playing in a top league with the best team in the world. Martinez on the other hand has only played with Porto in Portugal and has no other experience at a top European league.

Hopefully this summer is finally the year we bring in a world class striker as there is no doubt our season has been hampered by the lack of quality and options up front.

What striker would you like to see Arsenal sign?
