Arsenal Open Fresh Talks With Sagna, But Will He Stay?

By on February 5, 2014

Arsenal have opened fresh talks with defender Bacary Sagna in a last ditch attempt to secure his long-term future.

The Frenchman is out-of-contract at the end of the season and is free to speak with foreign clubs about a move abroad as of last month.

The likes of Galatasaray, PSG and Monaco are all willing to offer him a huge pay-day to quit the Emirates and are trying to lure him away with three year deal’s and wages worth well in excess of £100,000-a-week, plus a sizeable signing on bonus.

So far, Arsenal have only offered the 30-year-old a two-year extension with a small pay increase from £60,000 to £70,000-a-week following two rounds of negotiations, and talks have been in deadlock since late last year.

However, the Mirror are one of several newspapers who are reporting today we’ve made another attempt to tie him down to fresh terms and are in talks with the players representatives once again.

Sagna is demanding a three-year deal on improved terms and boss Arsene Wenger is believed to be ‘desperate’ to find a compromise. The right-back is 31 this month so he’d be over 34 by the time a three-year deal would expire, so this is almost certainly going to be his last big contract.

Will he stay?

It’s difficult to know how this will pan out but as it stands, Sagna is odds on to leave with the majority of bookmakers. Obviously things can change quickly but the signs right now are that he’s off in the summer. I certainly wouldn’t be betting any of my hard-earned money on him signing an extension any time soon.

However, the longer this drags on the better odds you’ll get on him staying so maybe it’s worth using some of those free bet offers and having a speculative punt. You can get odds of 4/1 right now so if you have a feeling he’ll stay, you can get free bets at certain bookmakers and not risk a penny of your own money. If he ends up staying, it’s win-win. If he goes, you’ll only be upset about us losing a valuable player, not any of your own money.

While the bookies think he’s leaving, there is still hope he’ll stay. He’s been a hugely loyal player to Arsenal over the years and turned down big-money moves away in the past. However, with his being his last big contract you can understand Sagna wanting to secure as long a deal as possible, particularity with the injury problems he’s had over the last two seasons, but you can also appreciate that Arsenal don’t want to give a player that’s almost 31 a three year deal.

Hopefully we get some good news on this soon, as the papers are claiming that Arsene Wenger, Per Mertesacker and Tomas Rosicky have all either agreed or are close to agreeing new deals and they’re waiting on the Sagna saga to be resolved before it’s all announced, so it would be a huge boost during the title run-in if we could secure the future of all four.

Do you think Sagna will stay at Arsenal?
