Wenger To Ditch New Striker Plans After Bendtner Injury Boost

Arsene Wenger has been tipped to shelve plans to sign a new striker this month after learning that Nicklas Bendtner is set for an early injury return, according to reports today.

The Danish striker injured his ankle while scoring the opening goal against Cardiff City on New Years Day and was subsequently ruled out for four to six weeks.

The injury, coupled with the news that Theo Walcott has been ruled out for the season, meant that Wenger was forced into the transfer market and we’ve been strongly linked with Real Madrid’s Alvaro Morata, Porto’s Jackson Martinez and Atletico Madrid’s Diego Costa in recent days.

However, the Times and the Metro are both reporting that Bendtner’s injury is healing far quicker than Arsenal’s medical staff expected. The 25-year-old is now on course to return to training in a matter of days and is targetting a return against Fulham on the 18th of January.

Both newspaper’s suggest that Bendtner’s early return could see the boss ditch his plans to bring in a new striker this month, and wait for the summer when he’ll have more chance of landing one of his top targets.

Obviously it’s good news that Bendtner will return to action sooner than expected, but I’ll be a little disappointed if we don’t bring in another forward in January.

Even with Bendtner fit, we still look short of option in attack – particularly now Theo is unavailable. Podolski doesn’t look comfortable on his own through the middle and I really don’t think it’s wise to rely on just Giroud and Bendtner for the second half of the season when we’re going for the title.

Morata on loan would be ideal, and then we can go for the likes of Costa in the summer when they should be more attainable.

    I think the biggest idiot is Ben who calls Wenger a “bigger idiot”. The day some of our fans stop thinking good players are always outside the team is the day we shall have fans supporting the club through thick and thin. What is the point in spending money on a second rate striker when we can get our first choice strikers by being patient for the summer? We were trying to panic buy because we thought Bendtner’s injury would sideline him for longer than it has turned out now. Is this bad? If Bendtner can return in two weeks why should we panic buy? The way some of our fans talk about spending makes one wonder whether that’s the way they spend their personal money or they are just narrow minded people who think that a club or organisation should just spend money anyhow.

    It really is such a shame that Theo has been injured so badly just after what he began to beso comfortable in his favoured position in the more central role, endorsing his choice by scoring plenty of goals and making even more.

    To say Arsenal will miss him would I feel be an understatement. Let us hope that Arsene brings in a suitable replacement not just as cover for Theo but also for any other eventuality. It would be catastrophic now if the first half of this league programme was thrown away for the sake of a little parsimony or lack of some forethought.
