Reports: Arsenal Could Buy Suarez For £70m

By on January 5, 2014

Arsenal could sign Luis Suarez for £70m in the summer if Liverpool once again miss out on the top four, according to reports today.

After a sensational start to the season that’s seen the Uruguayan score 20 Premier League goals in just 16 games, Suarez was rewarded with a new £200,000-a-week deal that ties him to Liverpool until 2018.

The 26-year-old signed the contract extension in December, but not before his advisers insisted on having a watertight release clause written into the deal that would allow the striker to leave if the Merseysiders missed out on Champions League football.

The Mirror claim that Liverpool tried to set the fee at £100m – a figure that Suarez thought was excessive – so the two parties eventually settled on a buy-out clause worth £70m.

It means we won’t see a repeat of the rather embarrassing episode we had in the summer that saw us have a £40,000,001 bid rejected by Liverpool after Suarez’s advisers had told us he had a release clause that could be triggered by a bid in excess of £40m.

Suarez made his feelings clear in the summer that he wanted to play in the Champions League, so it’s no surprise that he’s ensured the buy-out clause it crystal clear in his new deal. Miss out on the top four and a club such as Arsenal can buy him for £70m. Simple.

In today’s market, and considering how well Suarez is playing, that would represent something of a bargain. If Bale is worth £100m then Suarez is easily worth that figure.

Liverpool are currently sitting fourth in the league and if Suarez continues to fire during the second half of the campaign, they have a decent chance of qualifying for the Champions League. But if they miss out, I hope we’ll be heading the queue of clubs ready to trigger the strikers £70m buy-out clause.

The clause applies to foreign teams bidding only, not England PL teams. In the case of EPL teams bidding, LFC have final say and can demand more apparently

How can you possibly know that?

I don’t, that’s why I said apparently. It does make sense though, because £70m is within the reach of Chelsea and City, and not so much arsenal.
Rodgers has always maintained that he will not sell to a domestic rival so wouldn’t surprise me if the clause refers only yo foreign teams…. I’m only speculating anyway, who knows the full details?

Yeah but do you think arsenal will win the league or a trophy? I think the EPL will be won by Chelsea or City and LFC have as much chance of the fa cup as arsenal do to be fair, and the champions league is either Real madrdids, bay earns or barcelonas so pretty much in

It was a rumour started by Daily Mail. The fact is they have no way of knowing the details of the contract. They manipulated both Liverpool and Arsenal fans, adding more spice to the transfer window, and more news and attention for the press. We only know for a fact that if Liverpool fails to qualify for the Champions League, Suarez can leave for a world record fee, may not be the 120m mentioned by Rush but certainly not 70m. Liverpool will not be foolish enough to repeat the same situation last summer, so my guess is there is no outright release clause.

Give it a rest already! Do you think Arsenal will be able to offer him more than Liverpool after this year? Suarez will go to Real Madrid…whether that’s this summer or after, who knows. Why would he go to Arsenal? They won’t pay him more than Liverpool is. Champs league? Arsenal have the same chances as Liverpool in being in the Champs league next year.. It definitely isn’t for the superior fans (ha!) or chances at silverware (ha!). Maybe Adebayor will come back? Keep your fingers crossed!

It’s Better 2 Have Everton In D Champs League Than Liverpool i.e Having A Team With Quality & Determination Than A Great Team That Fall From Grace 2 Grass.

What a bunch of childish morons, my dad’s bigger than you’re dad etc…….

Both teams are on the up this season and I’d much rather be a AFC or LFC fan than a Spud or Manure fan at the moment. As a Liverpool fan I have a lot of respect for Arsenal, the way they’ve stuck with Wenger and never spent too much in the transfer market.

I thought you shouldn’t have sold VP to Man U, in the same way I don’t think LFC should sell Suarez to any other PL team, its basic common sense. The difference is LFC had more control of the Suarez saga than you did with VP. In hindsight though VP move has backfired, and I couldn’t be happier about it, he’s a complete cnut and got what he deserved.

Can’t see Wenger splashing out that kind of money, despite the fantastic form he’s been in. Wouldn’t be surprised with 2 or 3 more 30m+ signings before Wenger retires, but even Man City and Chelsea haven’t spent that kind of money on a single player.

As for all the nonsensical comments above, Suarez clearly was keen to join Arsenal in the Summer, so why would he have no interest now that they’re sitting top of the league and qualified from one of the toughest groups in Champions League history? The pathetic “you haven’t won anything for 8 years lol” doesn’t hold much weight when Ozil would happily join us from a bigger and better team than Liverpool and Suarez seemed to think his prospects would be greater at Arsenal.

If Liverpool once again fail to gain Champions League qualification, there’s absolutely no way they’ll be able to force Suarez to stay for another year. The statement that Liverpool have just as much chance as Arsenal to gain CL Qualification is rather moronic.

Perhaps dbradley17 would like to revisit Suarez’s comments that he wants to be playing at the highest level (ie Champions League), it’s not about getting more money.

I don’t know why Wenger is beating around the bush, he said he needs a “special” striker. Isn’t Jackson Martinez one of them?’ Please check out his skills and goals, he is very strong, very quick, got fantastic dribbling skills, very hungry for goals… He is super quality, more so, he is an Arsenal fan. Mr Wenger, no need to look any further, i strongly believe this guy ticks all boxes for us, on a long and and short term fix.
