REPORTS: Arsenal Confirm Interest In Superstar Striker – Could We Pull It Off?

By on November 29, 2013

Some interesting reports coming out of France over the past 24 hours that claim Arsenal were one of the first clubs to confirm their interest in signing the unsettled Edinson Cavani.

Cavani only joined PSG from Napoli in July when the big-spending French outfit splashed out £55m for his signature, with the striker snubbing interest from the likes of Chelsea and Man City.

However, it seems his time in Ligue 1 isn’t going as smoothly as he would have hoped with the reports suggesting he is already growing tired of playing in Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s shadow and is so keen for a move that he has asked his agents to find out which clubs would be interested in acquiring him.

The Express are one of several newspapers who claim that Arsenal were one of the first clubs to confirm their interest and would seemingly jump at the chance of luring him to the Premier League.

Now ‘confirming your interest’ and actually being able to pull off a big-money deal are two entirely different things. So could we sign Cavani?

One school of thought is that Arsenal wouldn’t say they were interested if they didn’t think there was at least a slim chance they could conclude the move. But do we really have the resources to beat off competition from the likes of Chelsea, City and Real Madrid to land Cavani?

PSG are unlikely to agree to sell for much below the £55m they paid for him less than six months ago. We showed we can afford to pay big fees with the £42.5m signing of Mesut Ozil, and I’m sure we have a spare £55m sitting around to spend on Cavani.

However, when you throw in agents fees and wages, the deal starts to look a little less likely. Cavani is reportedly on £135,000-a-week AFTER TAX at PSG. So we’d have to offer him over £200,000-a-week to match those wages which would smash our wage structure, unless he agrees to take a pay cut, which lets face it, he’s not going to do.

So while I’d love to see us try and land a player of Cavani’s obvious quality, I just don’t see it happening. I’d be happy to be proved wrong, but I think his wage demands are likely to scupper any deal. But it’s good to see we’re continuing to be ambitious in the transfer market.

Do you think we have any chance of signing Cavani?
