Suarez Moving To Arsenal Is “Practically Impossible”, Claims PFA Chief

By on August 9, 2013

Professional Footballers’ Association chief Gordon Taylor has claimed it will be “practically impossible” for Luis Suarez to join Arsenal this month.

Suarez has called in the help of the PFA to try and settle his dispute with Liverpool and force a move this summer with Arsenal the only club to table a formal bid so far this summer.

The 26-year-old made public his desire to leave and join Arsenal earlier this week, accusing Liverpool of reneging on an agreement that he could leave if a club in the Champions League came in with an offer of more than £40m.

The Uruguayan has also threatened to hand in a transfer request and take his case to the Premier League. However, Taylor has warned that it will be practically impossible for any move to be concluded this late in the window. He told the BBC:

“With the transfer window expiring, the difficulties of not only selling him to a competitor but also replacing him makes it practically impossible,” Taylor said.

“I think it really muddies the waters to have buy-out clauses that are supposed to be confidential between employer and employee,”

“Inevitably that gets out. The drafting of such clauses are far from straight forward.

“These are issues we are going to have to raise with the Premier League at our regular discussions.”

Liverpool owner John W Henry has insisted that Suarez will not be sold this summer, also citing that it would be too difficult for them to bring in a replacement this late, so it looks like we’ve got a real battle on our hands to save our summer.

Arsenal’s transfer activity so far has been nothing short of embarrassing and it seems we’ve been putting all our hopes on landing Suarez. If indeed it proves to be ‘impossible’ and we end up without a marquee signing when the window closes, there is almost certainly going to be a sizeable bash-lash from the fans towards the club.

Let’s see how things progress but I’d be majorly surprised if we see Suarez in an Arsenal shirt next season.

You have to ask yourself quite what the ability of Liverpool to replace has to do with the PFA chief. Does he have some interest?
I can’t remember him being in any way vocal when it came to the late sales of Nasri and Fabregas for example. How curious……

Dude, he’s talking about it because Suarez to his case to the PFA….doh!

So he can talk about the rights and wrongs of the contract, perhaps. Liverpools ability or otherwise to replace has absolutely no bearing n his engagement.
        Doh indeed.

Well this is where you are wrong my friend. The PFA’s job is to support and assist the interest of the players. So, yes, he can discuss the merits of the case in its entirety. Suarez wishes to move. He went to the PFA for support. Henry said he can’t move because it will be too difficult to replace him in a short period of time. So Taylor discusses the case. Doh indeed!

He has been advising Suarez and has insight into the situation and has made that insight public. What’s your problem with that? Don’t like the message so shoot the messenger. If I were you I would be praising Liverpool for standing up to contracted player, something Arsenal have failed to do over the last several years. This could be good for supporters of all clubs.

Utterly ambivalent about the message, the player and the PFA. His concern as the ability t enforce contracts or otherwise is indeed touching. Clearly he has recently been on a law course. This would account for his utter absence in the media during previous contractual disputes with players…..

What does Liverpool gain from keeping an unhappy player? Not healthy for the dressing room and not good for the moral of the team. Is it not better to cash on for such a player?

Arsenal is too much a class to keep a player aginst his wish. Arsene believes really that no body is bigger than the club. Something you can say now about Liverpool.

So he sells his best player to Man Utd. Yes, brilliant. This is why Ferguson – love him or hate him – was brilliant at protecting his club and its best interests. Anh he won trophy after trophy. He wouldn’t even sell a past-the-hill Heinze to Liverpool…just because it was Liverpool.

Your argument has no logic. The reason RVP and Nasri were allowed to go is because rather than give them new contracts (and a pay increase) they were allowed to run their contracts down meaning Arsenal risked losing them for free. Suarez was given a new 4yr contract last year and a pay increase of £40k pw. Next year if Suarez doesn’t sign a new contract he will be sold as there will then only be 2yrs left on his contract. RVP clicked his fingers and was sold, as did Nasri. Suarez did his best to move, primarily because he was offered an increase of £10m over 5 years, and now trains on his own, will soon apologise to the club and his team mates. And by early September when his ban ends he’ll be raring to go, You see if I’m wrong or right, but the club is bigger than any player, as long as it is run properly.

I can’t understand why Liverpool fans seems happy with keeping him, tbh.
He doesn’t want to be there, he has made that clear.
He was hardly good for the image of the club, even before he started whining about going to a bigger club.
If forced to stay, he won’t give anything close to 100%, and will be an even more disruptive influence than he has been in the past.
He’ll never be worth more money than he is now, and I can see a cut-price exit in January or next summer when things inevitably don’t work out.

I can appreciate that you don’t want to lose your only WC player; we lost RVP and got Giroud, so we know that pain all too well. Unfortunately, we all know that Liverpool as a club have been somewhat artificially held up on the back of a couple of lucky (and remarkable) CL runs. Those successes have papered over the cracks and allowed the optimistic fans amongst you to keep up the belief that you’re still a top club.

The truth is Liverpool are an average top 8 PL club, and their terrific fanbase and history doesn’t alter that sad fact. Arsene Wenger is the only manager in PL history to take a distinctly average club and turn it into real contenders, without relying on being bankrolled by a billionaire, and with Citteh, and Chelski with cash to burn, never mind Utd, it’s never going to happen again.

Liverpool’s spending in recent years has smacked of desperation; paying over the odds for the best they can attract, which is unimpressive to say the least.

I remember a time when Pool fans would have been chasing a player out of the region whom dared to suggest the club was beneath them, not cheer his every touch of a football.

    Pathetic.

A few good points Chris, but you don’t tell the full story. I would argue that the current Liverpool squad, even with a disgruntled Suarez, is more than capable of matching Arsenal this season. Courtinho and Sturridge, I feel will blossom this season (if the latter can remain fit). Add that to the mix of an impressive looking Aspas, a fully fit Lucas, a rejuvenated Joe Allen and all is not lost. Martin Kelly is fully fit again and will sure up the back, along with your old boy Toure. Mignolet looks quality and I expect the likes of Wisdom, Sterling and Ibe will improve quickly.

I think Arsenal may end up signing a good striker, but I suspect it won’t be our little horror! Without a big signing, I think it might feel like a little flat at the Emirates.

Like it our not, our clubs are not top three anymore. It pains me to see the likes of Citeh and Chel$ki up there at our (L’pool & Arsenal) expense.

I agree our spending has not always been good over the last few years.

Keeping Suarez out of your clutches, might give us a real chance of finishing above Arsenal, who know?

        August 9, 2013 at 4:11 pm

This year is the most stable summer since years for Arsenal. Arsenal even without signings are far better than Liverpool. Arsenal need 2 or 3 extra signings to be a title contender. Liverpool need a turn over to be a candidate for a top 4. No offence but that is the truth.

        DO NOT UNDERESTIMATE STABLE MANAGEMENT

        • Alan5times

          August 9, 2013 at 4:17 pm

I agree with you about stable management Ibrahim, but if you are honest, it’s not helped you win much mate. This summer has been stable, be it’s probably because you have no players left that the hungry wolves want?

So Gerrard, Lucas, Couthino, Sturridge, Mignolet, Johnson, Kelly, Toure, Agger, Sterling etc are bad players in your opinion, not to mention Luis Suarez? Liverpool after Xmas were a whole different animal, to the team that had only 2pts from their first 5 games with Suarez as the only goal scorer available. The Liverpool that starts this next campaign will I believe surprise many people, and will I believe finish in the top 4, time will tell if I’m right or not. 🙂

You are forgetting that Arsenal are the mos inform team losing just game since Feb 1st.
Giroud , Podolski had 1 full season to settle down and it can only get better.Team chemistry on a high with 4 English internationals in the first squad.
Liverpool can hope for is injuries to some key Arsenal players to pip them to fourth.
tbh I can’t see it.We have winter window to buy as well and wenger is pretty certain to make use of it.

Another argument that is incorrect. Suarez as recently as June spoke of his appreciation of Liverpool and their fans support. He goes and meets up with Cavani and co, and suddenly he HAS to leave, for reasons that keep changing. I believe the real reason is money. Arsenal offered £150k pw and he kept insisting he would not put in a written transfer request so that would mean an extra £10m over a 5yr contract, on his wages he now receives at Liverpool. He’s so desperate to leave that he still hasn’t put in a transfer request! When he first started his press campaign in Uraguay his agent was obviously not in the loop cos he said at first Suarez was happy at Liverpool and wouldn’t be leaving. He changed his script several days later. Don’t kid yourself that this player is unhappy, he’s just greedy like most of these players are. His show of moping around in training last week was to send the management a message they risked having an unhappy player on their hands. Well his bluff has been called, and six prem games from now he’ll be raring to go!

        August 10, 2013 at 4:40 am

I think people just have trouble on the rival bit. We regularly get at least 4th and have done for over 15 years straight, whereas you didn’t even get into the Europa cup places last season and are now not even the number 1 team in Liverpool anymore. Now when the league starts it’s Everton that we all look at in terms of who might be challenging us for places. Sorry but that’s just our automatic thinking now. It’s not a wind up or even a purposeful thing, just the way we now think. Spurs fans as well. My spurs fan mate last year was saying who would have the top 6 places and he didn’t even mention you lot once. Turns out he was right not to lol

What’s wrong Chris? A little bit upset you weren’t able to sign Suarez? Yes, we’ve had our problems and we were almost bankrupt too. But we’re trying to improve, get back to where we’ll at least be challenging for top 4. By the way, what have you guys done these last 8 years? Won a trophy much? Ever won the European Cup/Champions League? No, you say? Sit down lad, just SIT DOWN.

It will be interesting to watch. I have wondered what would happen if we kept Henry, Fabregas, Vieira, van Persie against their will. Ok, so these players loved Arsenal and felt they owed Wenger their gratitude which stops Saurez being a parallel and such, but Suarez can set an example to other teams who might consider holding on to unhappy players. I have seen it only with Tevez and Man City had a bunch of alternatives to use so Tevez was wasting his time.

    • tommyt

      August 10, 2013 at 2:50 am

Suarez is actually in a much stronger position than Tevez was. Suarez and the management know that he is their number 1 hope for goals and wins. Tevez – Like you said – was dispensable. Good! but dispensable.
There are always another 3 or 4 quality players waiting to get a chance in each position at city so they knew they could call his bluff.
I know that Liverpool, right now, are feeling strong and in control but I just wonder, as the transfer clock ticks down and they see a possible £55m offer on the table and then look at outcomes like Suarez not being let play or just not giving his all. then having to sell him later for a lot less money. They might just think it’s easier to get rid now and move on.
I don’t know anymore anyway. it’s gone on for so long now with day by day contradictions that I’m almost washed out from it. Don’t think I can take anymore of the ups and downs. If we end up getting him, Great! If not, then just hope Wenger has a damn good plan B. Either way, COYG!

It seems Luis Suarez will continue to dominate this transfer window. However we need to ask ourselves whether it is all worth the hype? Whichever way Suarez issue goes the two big clubs of Liverpool and Arsenal will remain as they have always been. Let’s get real here. Arsenal has been beating Liverpool even when Suarez has been in the team and I don’t see this changing. Suarez normally scores at most two goals in a single game which is good but may not propel a team to greater glory than it deserves. With or without Suarez Arsenal will compete favourably this season. Already Arsenal has the quality players to put up a good challenge. It is only looking for the icing of the cake! There are many good strikers around which Arsenal can identify. Who knew Thiery Henry or Bergkamp or Van Persie before they came to Arsenal? For the doubting Thomas don’t be surprised if Giroud bangs in 25 EPL goals or Walcott 20 goals this season! Such is the nature of Arsenal that it transforms strikers into goal machines. Have you forgotten a time when Adebayor scored over 20 goals a season? If it was not for his selfishness he would have gone on to be a great success at Arsenal! It is because of his inflated ego that he prematurely aborted his career! I don’t claim to be a prophet but my analytical mind tells me that these are possible scenarios. Hence I don’t think Arsenal should lose sleep over failure to sign Suarez nor should Liverpool think thatif they retain Suarez everything will turn to gold. Perhaps Liverpool should examine where the major cause of their problem lies! Names of managers are not as irrelevant as some people might pretend after all!
