Arsenal Refuse To Up Suarez Offer Due To Conflict Over Release Clause

By on July 30, 2013

Arsenal are refusing to increase their offer for Luis Suarez because the strikers advisers are adamant we’ve already triggered his release clause by offering £1 above £40m, according to reports.

We submitted the unusual £40,000,001 bid early last week and it was immediately rejected by Liverpool with Brendan Rodgers claiming it was nowhere near the players valuation.

However, with many expecting Arsenal go back in with an improved bid, there has been little movement in almost a week and the Mirror claim it’s because Suarez’s advisers are adamant we’ve trigger an automatic release clause in the players contract and feel he should now be free to leave if personal terms are agreed.

Arsenal have been made aware of this and are holding fire until the situation is cleared up, which could take weeks meaning the deal is likely to go right down to the wire.

Liverpool insist the clause merely means they have to inform Suarez that an offer of over £40m has been made and they are under no obligation to sell at that price. This seems like a strange clause to me. Why would anyone agree to a clause that simply meant the club had to inform you of an offer? It’s meaningless so I find it hard to believe Suarez or his agents would have agreed to it.

The Uruguayan’s agents have been consulting lawyers and believe they have a strong case but dragging it through a Premier League arbitration hearing is likely to delay any potential move considerably. With Arsenal refusing to increase their offer, the only other course of action is for Suarez to hand in a formal transfer request making it virtually impossible for Liverpool to keep hold of him, but there is no indication yet that he’s willing to go down this road as he’ll relinquish loyalty bonuses.

The Mirror claim the striker still harbours hope of Real Madrid entering the chase but with the Spaniards fully-focussed on signing Gareth Bale, he’s aware that he’s a fall-back option for them and is therefore keen to pursue a move to the Emirates.

It all looks set to be a messy affair that’s likely to drag right until the end of the transfer window. With Suarez not available for the first six league games anyway, it seems Liverpool are in no rush to get things resolved any time soon.

Ideally for us, we’d have him on board asap as we’ve got Champions League qualifiers to worry about but I think we should accept that this deal is one that’s likely to take weeks to finalise.

Let’s hope the club know what they’re doing….

Do you think Suarez will end up moving to Arsenal? Or will we miss out?

We won’t sign him. Ominously Wenger is saying we can win the league with the squad we have. Utter nonsense of course but in past seasons this has meant I don’t intend to spend much (any) money. Never mind the striker issue, we need a GK, CH and DM. Why aren’t we signing them while we sort Suarez?

The clause was explained quite well by a guest legal expert on talksport. Under normal circumstances a team is not allowed to talk to or even approach a player they fancy without first getting permission from the contracted club. No doubt Arsenal have been in touch with the player agent, which already counts as “tapping up” and could be prosecuted if the PL really cared to go after it, but officially they are simply not allowed to. They effectively are not allowed to do anything except submit an offer to Liverpool. So Arsenal might like Suarez but they can’t discuss anything with him, not even have a casual chat (officially) with his agent without permission from Liverpool. The clause simply says that if any offer is made over the amount then Suarez is free to talk to the club. Suarez can go chat with the manager about his intentions, Arsenal can negotiate personal terms, tactics, player preferences … all the things they were previously not allowed to do. It might sound like a redundant exercise if no fee is agreed, but in fact it’s quite significant when you think about how much “tapping up” is not supposed to happen. At the very least Arsenal get to see if they need to pay Suarez 4 million a year or 6 million a year and thus be able to afford that amount in their budget. That’s quite important.

So it might seem like an odd clause but to me it makes sense. Suarez has always said that if a good team made a serious offer for him then he’d consider it. At the very least he wouldn’t dismiss it out of hand. That’s fair enough, although over-excited Liverpool fans might get upset at such statements. So his contract was modified to allow such a scenario to occur. A serious team came in with a serious bid and therefore Suarez wants to at least be afforded the freedom to speak with them. It’s actually quite reasonable. He’s not demanding to leave, he’s just asking for the freedom and the basic right to explore his options without being vilified.

One version of the story is that Liverpool have now refused to allow Suarez to talk to Arsenal even though the clause have been triggered. They’re saying “what’s the point?” but I suspect Suarez is just upset because he’s being backed into a corner. There is no need for Liverpool to strong-arm this scenario, they can still simply refuse to sell, and they should allow the player his fancy of having a chat with Wenger and negotiating a new wage if he really wants to waste his time. The reality is that Liverpool will simply never sell the player to Arsenal no matter what happens. It would be insanity. I mean honestly, what kind of idiot manager would sanction the sale of your best striker to a direct rival?

Understandable Adam. But in today’s world, you have to be realistic and safeguard the clubs financial future. There is no point holding on to an unhappy player. If Suarez doesn’t perform as well as last year then his valuation will go down drastically. Next year Suarez will only have two year left on his contract and Real Madrid will offer at best £25m. This means Liverpool will be £15m worse off and will have a poor season from Suarez. If you care about Liverpool, you wouldn’t let this happen. This is why Wenger sold RVP last year and got the best value for him. Arsenal survived without RVP. Liverpool should sell Suarez quickly for maximum and reinvest that money to get a new striker in time. That way, Liverpool will have money and a striker who is 100% committed to them. Rise above this ego thing that you will not sell to a fellow PL opponents. Until LFC is good enough to challenge for 4th place they are not our rivals, Man U were not our rivals last year because were in no position to challenge for the title. So we didn’t sell RVP to our rivals. Get real.

Stupid comment I mean really?? Man U were not competition for Arsenal so it was ok to sell RVP to them. ARE YOU SERIOUS?? I wont say any more as you just dot get it do you!

          July 30, 2013 at 12:17 pm

Ian, which part you don’t understand. If you thought that Arsenal were title challenger last year to Man Unites then you are smoking something. Even Fergi stopped mind games with Wenger because he realised Arsenal are not competitors for the title. And it has been like this for few years now. So would you have preferred to loose £25m , have an unhappy player for one year and loose him for free to Man U next year. How stupid is that?. You don’t seem to understand anything other than past rivalry with United. Accept it mate, unless we buy Suarez and improve our team we are not rivals to MU, CFC and MC for the title.

      • Adam

        July 30, 2013 at 12:13 pm

It’s not an ego thing, it’s about their aspirations as a team. Arsenal fans might scoff at being called Liverpool rivals, there are plenty of points between the two teams, but if Liverpool are to get a top 4 spot back, it’s probably to be at the expense of the Gunners. Selling Suarez to Arsenal makes them title contenders and really cements their top 4 status. Suddenly Liverpool are even further behind and have even further to catch up.

That’s the opposite of what Liverpool are trying to do. That CL spot might still be out of reach no matter what, but the idea of making your direct rival for that spot a stronger team while you make yourself weaker is kind of nuts. It’s not a personal thing or an emotional rivalry, it’s just the simple logic of trying to advance as a team.

As for Suarez being unhappy or being worth less … I’m not sure it’s true. Suarez is just that kind of player who will always be determined and always play hard, that’s part of what makes him so special and in demand. Plenty of players have been unhappy in their clubs for a season and yet still played incredibly well. If anything Suarez will want to ensure he stays on top of his game so he’s still attractive to the top teams come the next summer. And when he’s available again next year he’s still got two years on that contract. Liverpool still don’t have to sell. That might be a bit cruel, but the club priorities always come first.

And here’s the thing … isn’t the whole point of investing in players that you get somewhere for that money? Arsenal are willing to spend over 40 million pounds to get the player, why would Liverpool not be willing to lose some of that current price tag to keep him? If it meant CL qualification it would be worth every cent. Getting back into the European top competition is worth many many millions, and once you are there plenty of other players now see the team as more attractive. Suarez can then leave with a blessing as some other young up coming striker wants to prove himself with a newly successful Liverpool. The bottom line is that Liverpool need to get further up the PL table so whatever you have to do in order to ensure that, you do it. Selling to Arsenal dents that plan in too many ways for it to happen.

I think both Adam and Sam make fair points. To me, it all comes down to dollars and cents.

Liverpool will sell for 50 mio pounds as per Brendan Rogers’ comment, and if you think why 50 mio and not 40 mio? Why drag this on for 10 mio when you have other greater issues to think about and multi-million pound assets that are committed to you, to take care of?

As a business, or as a manager of people, you really don’t want to have a talking point like this at any point.

So maybe Liverpool is just buying time to find a replacement(s) and ascertain how much the replacement(s) will cost. I think they need 50 mio to buy 2 players.

Mr. Adam,Wenger sanctioned the sale of RVP to Man U who was very instrumental to their (Man U) winning the EPL. So why are Liverpool playing politics with words?

Arsene Wenger sold RVP to Arsenal’s arch rivals United, so why would Liverpool refuse to sale Suarez to Arsenal because of rivalry?

    • Adam

      July 30, 2013 at 10:23 am

I think perhaps the question should be different. It should be “why did Arsene Wenger allow RVP to be sold to a direct rival when clearly Liverpool will not allow Suarez to be sold to them?” Liverpool are not the odd ones here, Arsenal are. Selling RVP was, in my view, complete madness, no matter what the player demanded or what might have happened if they allowed the contract to run out. Costing yourself a successfull season for the sake of 20 million pounds just makes no sense. They almost missed CL qualification and may yet still not make the group stages. That’s the entire transfer fee gone, right there. As it turned out Arsenal went backwards and are still scrambling to improve their prospects. RVP and United got a PL title. So what aspect of selling RVP was even remotely sane?

Is football no longer a game where losers and winners are suppose to hug each other in the spirit of the game? Is playing football slavery for the players under contract with a team? Why all these transfer business of hatred and rivalry?

        • Adam

          July 30, 2013 at 12:17 pm

True, it does all seem a bit cruel and impersonal. Why should a player be forced to stay in a job he no longer enjoys? If he wants to move on, to be better, it would be good if he could be allowed. I think the big business of modern football makes that hard.

Hi Ayange,. Because Wenger care about Arsenal first. He does best for the club, and he doesn’t care where the player ends up. Last year if we were in with a shout to win the title, I am sure Wenger would have never sold the player and would have risked him leave us on a free, because that would have been in the best interest of the club. But because we were not in position to challenge for the title, therefore best thing to do was to get the money for him, which he can now invest in Suarez.

Ayange, arsenal sold VP because the club are obsessed with money in a very short sighted way. Think how differently would be perceived if they’d stood their ground. Suarez will not be going to arsenal.

      July 30, 2013 at 11:07 am

Dave – Arsenal sold RvP because he made it clear in a unilateral statement that he would not sign a new contract. It was as close to a transfer request as you can get without actually handing one in. Given that, the decision was ‘keep for final year and let him walk away for free’ or at least capitalise on a 29 year old, injury prone player. Not only did Arsenal get $24m, Man Utd have him on payroll for a further three years. As things turned out, RvP had another injury free season (only his 2nd ever)and won a PL medal. Arsenal also finished in ECL places, developed play and goal scoring share so that there was no longer reliance on one player. Everybody won really.

      • Dave

        July 30, 2013 at 11:22 am

Clearly you’re not an arsenal fan else ypu wouldn’t regard watching VP win the title with man u as a victory. Arsenal lost their best player and captain, to a rival, for an amount of money that meant they couldn’t get a replacement which is why Arse finished 26 points behind them. As I said, you’re being short term and just don’t get it. Everyone else is wrong but Arsenal again huh.

          July 30, 2013 at 11:53 am

Dave, please understand that Arsenal and Liverpool are bigger than one player. Like Arsenal survived without RVP, LFC will survive without Suarez. Would you let your club to become hostage to Suarez if he put in a transfer request? Would you sell him or keep him and loose his value?. Personally, I think, even is we are successful to buy Suarez, he might try next year to go to Real Madrid if they come calling next year.

Ioius, you mean Wenger doesn’t satisfy your needs. There are lot of Arsenal fans out there who are frustrated but understand the dynamics of football finances. My upbringing guides me not to call Mr Wenger asshole or address him in any derogatory way, same as I wouldn’t call you with any names to satisfy my ego. He might not be doing very well at the moment, but he has done for more to Arsenal than you and me. Have you forgotten unbeaten season, two doubles. 4 FA cups and champions league final. We will get to that level again but only if we are all united. We might have differences, but abusing each other or players or our manager will only drag us down and make us laughing stock.

Come on, the figure is Ps55m, not 50. Wenger lost out on Higuan when it was felt the asking price was so big. Amazing how it is thought Suarez will single handedly close the quality gap between Chelsea and Man $ity. Why not purse other targets in the meantime?? To be honest, Arsenal are no premiership trophy contenders, only vying for the top slot – which is also Liverpool’s ultimate tactical goal and they are not willing to sell to rivals. How is Liverpool going to be arm twisted into accepting 40m?? If Suarez hands in a transfer request, LFC will be obliged to sell but by any dimensions, Suarez is a LFC player and arsenal may still have to meet the asking price, or at least negotiate. LFC have played hard ball, and you may only expect them to stick to their guns. RVP, Clitchy, Nasir, Alexander Song etc were given away in the quest of making money, though it appears to have backfired on Arsenal. The idea is to mend fences with Arsenal fans, but, if Wenger agreed to release Ps 55m to land Suarez, it would be the eighth wonder of the world.

Livepool sold Torres their then best striker to chelsea who are rivals, what makes you think they cannot sell suarez to arsenal

    • Chris

      July 30, 2013 at 11:17 am

Torres was worth nowhere near £50m. Possibly half that amount. Loserpool took advantage of Abramovicz’ ludicrous ego and confetti money.

      July 30, 2013 at 11:18 am

Because Torres had not played we’ll all season and was hardly scoring in his last season, so £50 million was a no brainier !
But on the other hand Suarez in a lot of people’s eyes ( minus the incidents ) was the best player in prem, and also top 4 or 5 in the world, and had also scored 30 odd goals last season, with missing a few games aswell , also we were not competing for 4 th place with Chelsea, unlike arsenal ! Hope that answers your question dan.

Wenger and the club had no intention in the first place of signing Suarez because they knew damn well that Liverpool would never sell at our offers, clever ploy that leaving it ’til the last moment (so we now read) knowing full well that some greedy club (got lots but want more! more! more! I tells yah!) would come in and gazump us so Gaz and Weng the double act can say “well we tried without success”…

This duo has us all fooled with the same ol’ Wenger at the helm coming up with the usual confidence Gooner booster “We must develop inside the club and we’re no close to signing anyone” There’ll still be some of the so called Arsenal supporters who’ll still come up with “In Arsene we trust” well I and many others certainly don’t!…….There’s only one way to put a stop to another 8 years of misery and we know the only way don’t we fellow gooners?

adam… rvp last yr of contract, public statement/embarrassment of ur captain, we hadn’t the resources and we couldn’t promise success due to not having the financial resources, lost nasri clichy fabregas song rvp an so on, if we did have the resources we would of won something because expenditure = silverware, but due to wengers project tht started 8yrs ago with the stadium and the plan to increase income to allow the club to compete with lets say man united who generated almost double what we did back then (the gaps closed since then) we’ve bn in a weak position where we couldn’t break our wage structure an outgoings for the sake of a individual because the clubs project and future sustainability is more important than an individuals short career success ie silverware… we aint leeds/portsmouth/liverpool, we are now in a stronger financial stage/position where we are able to compete with the elite clubs not the oil rich clubs though who are ruining the game, short term pain for long term gain thts the arsebnal project, we have the best manger in the game i assure u, wenger put a 40mill offer in tht there highlights how much the club has moved on but you want to create a weakness in wenger because u been watching tht tv propaganda got u hating everything wenger supposedly does even though u know very little about what actually happens untill a long while after, this year will be the first year the side goes into a seasons with there captain from last an an unchanged/weakened side having to gel tht very season hence the poor starts and very strong finishes but he we where to sign suarez an 1 or 2 more squad players in say wing and dm we can compete i assure u

RvP to Man Utd, Suarez to Arsenal! Two players who at a point in their careers were not happy being where they were. Was Arsenal right to sell, business angle yes,Wenger did well.If I were Wenger,NO,I won’t sell even though I would lose him for free the next season. This would have sent a huge message to him,to our rivals that we still had strong ambitions;who knows with the players we bought,we might have had a real chance,as RvP would had played a part.No good player wants to sit on the bench for long, therefore,Rogers is right to hold tight to Suarez. If Wenger really want him,he should increase his bid. I don’t believe he wants to.Wenger already bought Sanogo and except a major long term injury hits a player,Wenger would never buy. Meanwhile,Arsenal squad might be growing thin,we have dropped some deadwoods without replacing them.We need to buy and buy soon enough.
