Hope For Arsenal? Higuain’s Move To Napoli Hits Late Snag

By on July 26, 2013

I stumbled across some intriguing news tonight Gooners with Italian journalist Tancredi Palmeri confirming that Gonzalo Higuain’s proposed move to Napoli has been held up once again due to a late snag over add ons.

Arsenal came close to signing the Argentinean two weeks ago before Real Madrid upped the asking price at the last minute following interest from Napoli. The Italians were flush with cash after selling Edinson Cavani to PSG and had offered in excess of £30m for the 25-year-old. Arsene Wenger wasn’t prepared to match their offer so we switched our attention to Liverpool’s Luis Suarez and left the Serie A club free to agree a deal with Madrid and the player.

Higuain arrived in Italy on Wednesday and was mobbed at the airport by excited Napoli fans before heading off to complete his medical ahead of a scheduled Thursday evening press conference to announce is signing. But, Thursday came and went and the press conference was cancelled at the last minute, with Napoli claiming that ‘minor contractual issues’ had held up the deal, and a new press conference was scheduled for Friday evening.

However, once again the unveiling has been cancelled and Higuain is yet to be confirmed officially as a Napoli player, with respected Italian journalist Tancredi Palmeri claiming the two clubs are still haggling over add ons, saying the hold up is now becoming a ‘mystery’.

I’ve also read rumours online that Madrid have moved the goal posts at the last minute again, demanding more add ons on top of the reported £32m fee, which wouldn’t surprise me given how they acted when we were negotiating with them.

The likelihood is the clubs will eventually iron everything out and Higuain will become a Napoli player, but should Arsenal try and make a late attempt to hijack the deal given the situation with Suarez is begging to look like it could get complicated and VERY expensive?

Suarez and his agent are at loggerheads with Liverpool over this supposed clause and there’s even been talk of him taking the club to court as he feels any bid of over £40m acts as an automatic release clause. Liverpool are digging their heels in and are insisting the clause means nothing, and are demanding in excess of £50m from us, which is A LOT of money considering the baggage he’ll bring.

Higuain could potentially be around £20m cheaper and wouldn’t divide the Arsenal fan-base half as much as Suarez is currently doing, so I’d love to see Wenger try and steal the Argentinean hitman from under Napoli’s noses. He better get on the phone quickly though….

What do you think? Would you like to see us make a late move for Higuain? Or should we continue with our pursuit of Suarez?

No. We have left the blocks with Suarez. We need to make it to the finish line. Far better striker than Higuain and proven in the premier league. Gotta see it through.

No need rushing back with a late bid for Higuain let Nappy and Reels sort themselves out. We need to see this Suarez issue through to the end whatever the outcome. Comparing the two Higuain is quite good but Suarez is a much better buy that’s why he is more expensive!!! Its Suarez or no striker. Plus Higuain is just like the other Arsenal players skillful but not a troublemaker. I have already said to get over the top we need someone that people fear someone with above average skills and also scares people. PEOPLE FEAR SUAREZ COS HE IS SKILLFUL AND HE BITES…. LITERALLY!!

We should have paid the going price for Higuain. I wouldn’t want to spend more than half of our transfer budget on one player but the fact it seems that all our eggs are in one basket….case seems worrying?

Suarez is a better player than Higuain: we need 2 complete what we started about Suarez. Wenger can and will manage him better than Lfc’s manager.

Worth and value are not necessarily the same thing. I agree his value may not be £40m but his worth to us probably is give. The lack of that level of talent available in this transfer window. His worth to Liverpool is definitely £55m but I hope we don’t pay anymore than £40m + £2.

Suarez would be a good capture but it will either need Arsenal to increase offer to £50 million or carry on with arbitration which will mean we do not get him before the transfer window shuts. As we know he would also miss the first 6 matches. If Arsene would go back for Higuain with a £35 million offer and purchase Bernard it would be a better deal.

I don’t give a toss which one we sign anymore as long as we do get one or the other. I prefer Higuain but having started the bidding for Suarez, it is obvious he wants to come so if AW really wants him he has to pay up to stop this ridiculous farce as we are getting involved in ANOTHER deal that is looking like ending in disaster.
Two world class players who both want Arsenal and we end up with neither will make us look pathetic, so either pay the full whack and get Suarez if he is the man we want or pay up and get Higuain if HE is the man we want.
We are starting to look a bit comical

Well, judging by these comments “the Arsenal fan-base is (clearly) divided”. Some feel Suarez would be perfect, while others think he’s by far the best option. I agree with both views.

Higuain makes better money sense and let’s us still bring in another 2 players as well. 50m for saurez is far to much. Hope LFC get relegated. Every time Brendon Rodgers talks I fall asleep!

Suarez not worth £40m? What are you guys smoking at Emirates??? I can understand that your fan base is split between wanting Suarez or not but to delude yourself by saying that he is not worth £40m is just plain stupid. Cavani is a good comparison as they are the same age. Go and look at their stats and tell me who is the better player and should be sold for £55m!! You are getting a bargain at £50m! To say that Suarez will perform better under Wenger is also delusional and not based on any fact. Great players perform regardless of who their coach is. Suarez has performed well under the Liverpool club or else why will wenger bid £40m plus £1? Oh yes, you are not buying him for his baggage, you are buying a world class premier league proven goal machine. Cough up £50m and stop playing silly games with £1 coins!!

Cavani was playing for a club already in champions league. Also he didn’t say anything about leaving Napoli. He also scored 29 goals in the league.
On the other hand Suarez plays for a club that is not even in Europa despite scoring 21 goals for them. He also has expressed his desire to leave to play in champions league.
So considering all these 40m is a fair price for Suarez. And its not that he will perform better under Wenger but the fact that he’ll have better team around him.
And last but not the least, whatever they are smoking at emirates is better than what Liverpool were smoking when they signed carrol-downing-henderson.

Agreed. What John Henry was smoking when they signed those three – must’ve been cut with some nasty-ass stuff.., maybe dandruff from Wayne rooney’s head, post-hair transplant.

I agree with you guys. I urge Suarez to force his move & rest his mind only that liverpool are greedy to demand 50m. Just like what the goner villain (rvp) did last season to move to man u.

guys, don’t forget that aw hasn’t thrown away his transfer policies completely.based on how things are dragging on right now, i don’t believe he will be making any mega signings again this season.

Wenger never had any intention of signing another striker other than Sonogo. The farce of Suarez was purely to con the fans into purchasing the last of the season tickets (I still got a phone call offering me a season ticket this last week, and I’m not even on the list anymore after the RvP debacle).
You can tell from Wenger’s latest change to “we are not close to any signing” that the final season tickets are now gone, and he’s sticking his middle finger up at the fans again.
No signings by Emerates cup and I think Wengers going to find out just what the fans think of him these days. I think he and the club have crossed a line this season.

Suarez is worth £45mil, Higuain is worth £35mil.
But what are their wage demands?
If Higuain is asking for higher wages than Suarez then Suarez could end up being the cheapest purchase!
    What do you guys think?

Need a Right Back who can cross a ball and defend corners.

Need a Defensive Midfielder over 6ft 4inch who can pass the ball and break up play and also read the game (to slot in when defenders get forward and position him self for defending corners).

Defending still a problem against quality opposition!

Tell AW to table a last bid of 45m and see what next. Liverpool coach is too greedy and nervous of selling to arsenal. Please Wenger go ahead and settle them and rest this long outstanding transfer issue. Please remember ur backlines that are linking, don’t just focus your attention on strikers alone. What does it profit us when u score 50 goals and went ahead to concede the same margin, that is back to square one. Be wise and spend wisely on quality as u are being known for. Wish entire Gooners Good Luck.

I believe Wenger is playing Russian roulette. He won’t pay 30 million or more for any player. We will have to waitand see how the Suarez situation pans out.
He is only interested in last minute deals when the player value will have dropped at least 30%.He likes African born players for obvious reasons. He doesn’t care whether these guys will be away for the ANC ,smack in the Jan/Feb peak months of the season.
he has forgotten that Kanu was not eligible in Jan /Feb 1999. If the guy was available ,who knows Arsenal could have won the double in 1999.
As for bragging Arsenal can compete for the title,it remains to be seen.
Along with many fans I believe he has caused the gunners to fall significantly behind the top 3.Failure to bridge the gap is not an option.
Since Arsenal moved to the ES,gate rceipts is not aproblem concerning the gap with MU. It is sponsorships.Sponsors only want to be associated with a winning team with trophies. This gap could widen in the coming years if the gunners continue to be unable to win trophies.4th is like winning the title but a continuing trend of being unable to win trophies will undermine the gate receipts .If Wenger aintcarful,he could cause further damage to Arsenal when they drift out of the cl reckoning. Liverpool is agood example.
