Wenger’s Dithering See’s Arsenal Miss Out On Key Transfer Target

By on July 14, 2013

So it looks like we’re about to miss out on one of our key transfer targets with Julio Cesar set to join Napoli on a season-long loan deal from Queens park Rangers, according to Sky Sports News.

Cesar has been strongly linked with a move to the Emirates this summer and many reports have claimed he was Wenger’s first choice goalkeeper with the boss believed to be lining up a £1.5m bid. The Brazilian was also understood to be keen on a move to Arsenal as he’d prefer to remain in London where he and his family are settled rather than return to Italy.

However, as the weeks went by no formal offer was tabled from Arsenal and it seems Cesar has grown tired of waiting around and is now on the cusp of joining Napoli on loan.

If, as the newspapers have been suggesting for months now, Wenger really is wanting to bring in an experienced keeper and Cesar was his first choice, then missing out on him is simply scandalous. He is the perfect option for us this summer. At 33 he’s vastly experienced, is a winner, Brazil’s No.1, has Premier League experience, is CHEAP and is at an age where he’ll not only be able to help Szczesny improve but he also wont pose a threat to the Pole’s long-term future at the club.

I’ve been left disappointed with Arsenal missing out on player many times over the years, but this one just makes no sense. It’s not like the Juan Mata case where Wenger refused to sanction a multimillion pound deal. We’re talking about a £1-£2m transfer here. Or even a loan deal! Why are we not snapping him up on loan?!

The only reasons I can think of is that Wenger’s dithering and inability to make a decision has cost us once again, OR his team have been concentrating on other targets – in which case we need to increase our resources because a club the size of Arsenal should have enough man power to be able to multi-task and negotiate several deals at once.

There is of course the remote possibility that we’re in for someone better than Cesar, but I very much doubt this is the case, or perhaps more likely, the papers got it completely wrong and we were never looking to buy Cesar in the first place. If I was a betting man, I’d bet we’ll go into the new season with Wojciech Szczesny and Lukasz Fabianski as our top two goalkeepers.

Are you disappointed Arsenal have missed out on Cesar? Or is Szczesny good enough?

So where did you read that Arsene wanted Cesar? Newspaper talk?
Why have we missed out when nowhere have we read that an offer was made, nowhere has Arsene W said I want J Cesar. This article is based on nothing other than speculation and quite frankly speculation is killing us. Try reporting on news. Not winding fans up by giving your opinion on speculation that is generally inaccurate.
Our goalkeepers will get better and better. They are still young. Szczesny will be world class and Fab had a brilliant run the the first team last season. We do not need a goalkeeper. And before you reply we need a great goalkeeper today remember we had the second best defence in the premier league last season with these two in goal. This year will be better. Let’s hope AW brings in Higuain and Suarez – now that would scare people!

If Wenger did not say he wanted Cesar bloody well should have done ! What the articles says about Cesar is spot on. And we need a better keeper NOW … not when youngsters have improved. In fact Fabianski (and Manone) will never be top rate. We have not had a sound, experienced top flight keeper since Lehman … and I suppose you will find some way of saying Wenger is still a genius. He isn’t !!

Exactly Chris, Cesar could have come in for a couple of seasons, helped Szczesny improve before he took over the gloves. Opportunity missed from Arsenal.

      Agree completely.

And even if we were in for Ceaser, who is to say that QPR were willing to sell or loan to Arsenal. They obviously would prefer to loan him out to a team in another leaugue, with the hope they can double or truple his value by next year.

Wenger and Gazidis are dithering surely it would have sense to have made the signing and taken them to the pre season tour? If Arsene and Gazidis make the right signings the league is a realistic target but unfortunately in Arsene and Gazidis I no longer trust!

“So it looks like we’re about to miss out on one of our key transfer targets”

“as the weeks went by no formal offer was tabled from Arsenal”

“Cesar has grown tired of waiting around”

Either you make statements like that with intimate knowledge of the club and how’ it’s run or you do so foolishly without one shred of evidence. Either way you don’t cover youreslf in one bit of glory.

I have just come off another Arsenal website where I lamented the fact that I cannot find any truth to stories that are being spread about possible Arsenal coming’s and going’s . Mack, do you have any solid proof that Julio Cesar was ever approached by anyone at Arsenal with an offer ? What about Higuain ? Was there an approach made to Real Madrid at anytime by Arsenal regarding a possible transfer ? Simply put don’t talk about impending transfers unless you have the facts, I have no problem with speculation thats part of the fun but nonsense is beginning to annoy me. At this stage of the close season we need to know the facts

    • Shaggy

      July 14, 2013 at 6:35 pm

Totally agree noelc. Does nobody remember last season?
Arsenal spoke to Cesar to see if he wanted to join them however he rejected Arsenal in favour of QPR. So what makes people think that Arsenal would want a player who had previously snubbed them because he wanted to be a part of a ‘big project’. There is no proof that we re actually chasing him, especially considering his agent hasn’t even come out and said that he is joining Arsenal and they are usually the first to try and increase the money that they can make from selling him. Also, anyone thinking where is the proof, well here it is: http://www1.skysports.com/football/news/11670/8241634/Julio-Cesar-says-he-spoke-to-Arsenal-before-joining-Queens-Park-Rangers

like the first comment said stop winding up arsenal fans. it’s obvious you got an agenda just by the headline you picked. show us some evidence direct from any one from adrenal that said we wanted him. instead you believe out right the kind of creeps that bug dead girls mobile’s (see phone hacking scandal) as proof of your BS. it’s so called bloggers like you that get on my nerves, all hype no facts.

    • mac14

      July 14, 2013 at 2:12 pm

Get real. When has Arsene Wenger ever confirmed to the fans or media that he wants a player?! He said he didn’t know who Cazorla was 1 week before signing him! All we can work off is speculation these days, there are no ‘facts’ because we never find out the truth. EVERY reputable (Sky Sports, Telegraph, Guardian, etc) media outlet said we were in for Cesar, so I, like 99% of AFC fans and bloggers, can only safely assume that we are.

If you choose not to believe it because it hasn’t come out of Wenger’s mouth, then so be it.

      • moan utd

also back up your so called facts with evidence . don’t just speculate like the piss poor excuse we have for journalism. present some believable facts, not ‘a source close to the club or player’.this is what passes as evidence these days. again poor.

We have a keeper that was instrumental in achieving the second best defensive record in the Premiership.

QPR have a keeper who was instrumental in their relegation

Wenger also dithered on Paulinho, Thiago, Llorente, Gomez, Tevez, Grenier, Falcao, and plenty of others. If Wenger would stop dithering we could have had 20 or 30 signings by now. Wenger out!

Sorry where is the ‘dithering’ – Wenger never wanted Cesar, he probably wants an unproven goalkeeper who will not get in the way of the development of Chesney and Martinez. God you positive people are so gullible – he has either been lying over the past 8 years, or complicit in the deceit propagated by the club, either way unfortunately he is no longer to be trusted.

    July 14, 2013 at 2:22 pm

If Arsenal did dither over signing Cesar *then shame on us*
If Arsenal did not even try to sign him *then shame on us*
he would be a clear upgrade at the goalkeeper position and I’m tired, but not tired of bloggers or the media but tired of the club i love constantly buying and sticking with players for the future, a future that never seems to come.

its a shameful state that so far the only signing we have made is a 20 year old Forward with an injury record that could almost give Diaby a run for his money..

Now that i have mentioned Diaby thats leads me nicely on to the “Deadwood” that we are getting rid of, or should i say trying to get rid of.

Am i the only person asking the question “why do we have so much overpaid deadwood” ?
i would say as with any poor personnel discussions, its poor management.

But its blasphemy to say any such thing against the man who took this club to such heights i here some say? indeed AW did take us to the top of the hill.
but over the last 8 years he has bought us back down again.

every dog has his day.. and he has had his.. time to move on or step up and show us that you can take us bck to the top of the hill.

Arsene Wenger is a selfish man. He clearly knows how all the true supporters who love this club are waiting wanting to hear the news of transfers coming to this club. I don’t expect him to tell us who and what is happening specifically, but I do think he has an obligation to communicate with supporters and reassure them. After all the supporters pay his wages. Last week Brendan Rogers sent a communique to all Liverpool supporters to assure them he was still going to by some more top players. Wenger has not got an iota of care to do that. They just want to put on corporate tours to get money making markets in Asia. Well what about supporters here. The ones who pay big money to watch the team. We all know that the team as it is will not win the premiership or Champions League. Maybe a cup, but probably not. With our own eyes we know this because it’s obvious. I believe Wenger has started fantasizing that because the team was unbeaten in ten games they will win the league. Well the team I watched will not, can not. So please Mr Wenger, tell the fans your intentions and don’t treat the fans like s**t. And remember, as my grandmother used to say, CHEAP IS DEAR. Remember the millions in wasted wages on Sqillaci, Chamakh, Santos, Bendtner, Denilson, etc etc.
